Dog Parks Near Ronkonkoma: Sort the Pooch Pass First

The Town of Brookhaven runs two town dog parks, and you cannot simply turn up at either one. You need a Pooch Pass, the application is a paper form you mail in, and it wants a photograph of your dog. Sort it before you load the car.

Brookhaven runs exactly two town dog parks

Middle Island and Selden. The Town's own application sheet locates them this way: Middle Island sits north of Route 25 and west of Woodville Road, east of Currans Road and south of Whiskey Road. Selden is on the west side of Boyle Road, across from Donna Court.

Both open at 8:00am and run to dusk, seven days a week, with abbreviated hours on holidays. Dusk is a real closing time, and it moves across the year — the 6pm arrival that buys you an easy hour in summer finds a locked gate in December.

The Pooch Pass, and what you need in hand

The part that catches people out is that this is not an online signup. It is a printed application you mail to the Town Clerk, and it has to include a one-inch-square photograph of every dog named on the pass. Not a screenshot held up at a gate — an actual printed photo in an envelope. Build in lead time: if you decide on a Thursday that Saturday will be a dog park day, Saturday is not going to be a dog park day.

On cost: the form lists a $15 fee to replace a lost pass. The fee for the pass itself has been waived by Town Board resolution in past years, but as an annual action rather than a permanent change to the code — so confirm the current position with the Clerk's office rather than assuming it.

The spay/neuter rule that turns people away at the gate

Printed plainly in the rules: dogs must be spayed or neutered. Separately, female dogs in heat are prohibited, as are puppies under four months and any dog with a known history of dangerous behavior.

That first one is not negotiable at the gate. If you have an intact dog — a young one whose vet has advised waiting, or one you simply have not had done — the town parks are closed to you. Worth knowing before you have promised anyone a Saturday morning. When to neuter, and whether to, is a conversation for your veterinarian, not for us.

The Smithtown option in Nesconset

There is a fenced dog run at Charles P. Toner Park, 148 Smithtown Blvd, Nesconset, NY 11767, and Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown has a designated dog area.

Different authority, different paperwork. A Brookhaven Pooch Pass does not travel — Smithtown sets its own access rules, and a county park sits under Suffolk County. Call whoever runs the one you are aiming for.

From the Huntington side: that town's off-leash run is at the Animal Shelter, 106 Deposit Road, East Northport, NY 11731, weekdays 8am–6pm and weekends 9am–4pm. Same shape of rules — permit, licensed dog, rabies current, spayed or neutered, residents only.

What a dog park does to a coat

An hour off-leash is dirt worked down into the undercoat, other dogs' saliva, grit between the pads, and friction behind the ears, in the armpits and between the back legs. On a curly coat that is a mat starting. Wet then dry twice, and it is a mat you can no longer comb.

The mat never forms on top, where you brush. It forms underneath, where you stopped.

The tick point is not a scare tactic. New York State splits deer tick surveillance into nymphs from May to September and adults from October to December. In Suffolk County in 2025, 26.6% of nymphs collected carried the bacterium that causes Lyme; 52.8% of adults did. A nymph is the size of a poppy seed — fingers find them, eyes usually do not. Anything embedded goes to your vet; we spot ticks and tell you, we do not treat them.

You do not need to book after every visit

Most dog park mornings are a rinse, a proper dry and ten minutes with a comb. Book when the coat has gone past what a comb can fix, or when nails are due. A bath and brush runs $35 to $120 by your dog's weight; a full groom with a haircut runs $70 to $155.
