Four months is the age when a puppy stops being a private project and starts being paperwork. New York wants a license and a rabies vaccination by then. Your vet is finishing a schedule. And in the same few weeks you start wondering whether this dog can be brushed, left, or trusted around other dogs. Here is the order to do it in.

New York wants a license and a rabies vaccination at four months
This is the one hard deadline on the list. Under New York Agriculture and Markets Law § 109, a dog must be licensed and rabies-vaccinated from four months of age. Not "around then." Four months.
Do it on time for a reason beyond the law. The rabies certificate is the document that unlocks nearly everything else your dog will want to do locally — boarding, daycare, a town dog run permit. If it is not current, the answer at the door is no.
Put the vaccination and the license application in the same week. You need the certificate to apply anyway, so the order is fixed: vet first, clerk second.
Which town issues your license — check the address, not the ZIP
Dog licenses in New York are issued locally, by the town or village you live in. Not by the county, and certainly not by your ZIP code — which is where Ronkonkoma owners get tripped up.
Ronkonkoma is a hamlet in Suffolk County, and the area around Lake Ronkonkoma is split across more than one town. Two neighbors who share a mailing address line can end up filing with different clerks. Do not assume. Look up your own street address, or call the clerk and read them the house number. One phone call saves you a rejected application.
Anything marked "residents only" works the same way: municipal boundary, not postal address.
The first groom: book it before they actually need it
Most owners get this backwards. They wait until the puppy looks scruffy, book a full haircut, and the dog's first experience of a salon is ninety minutes of clippers, dryers and holding still. That is a lot to ask of a four-month-old.
The better version is boring on purpose. A bath, a blow-dry, nails, a tidy around the eyes and feet, and home. The point is that your puppy learns a table, a dryer and a stranger holding their paw are ordinary things. Every groom for the next twelve or fifteen years is easier if you spend one appointment on that now.
Ask your vet for a date
When is this puppy covered enough to be in a salon around other dogs? That is a medical question and it belongs to your vet.
Book a bath and brush, not a haircut
Bath and brush is priced by weight and starts at $35. A full groom with a haircut runs $70 to $155. A young puppy rarely needs the second one yet.
Say it is a first visit

Come back sooner than feels necessary
Short, uneventful visits close together beat one long visit twice a year.

When the vaccine schedule lets daycare start
Daycare in Ronkonkoma runs 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, and it is a good thing for a young dog once the timing is right. The gate is not temperament. It is the shot record.
Puppy vaccinations arrive as a series of boosters, and your vet sets the dates from your puppy's own history. What matters for planning is the finish line, not a schedule you found online. Ask at the next appointment when the series completes, then work backwards.
Overnight boarding is the strictest of the three services, because it is the one Suffolk County regulates directly. County Code § 302-13 says no dog may be accepted at a boarding kennel without a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian covering:

That last row is the one to write down. Bordetella runs on a six-month clock while the rest run on a year, so it is the requirement owners most often let lapse without noticing. Set the reminder now and you never have the conversation where a boarding stay falls apart the day before you travel.
This is county law for boarding kennels, not our house policy, and requirements change. Confirm the current list with your veterinarian and with us before you rely on it.
Bordetella does not make kennel cough impossible. It makes it less likely and usually milder.
What people call kennel cough is properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, which the American Veterinary Medical Association attributes to roughly eleven contributing pathogens. The vaccine covers one significant piece of it. Any group setting carries some respiratory risk, and an honest facility says so.
The habits worth building in the first six months
Almost everything that makes an adult dog easy to groom is decided before their first birthday, at home, for free. None of it requires an appointment.
Do this now
- Handle every paw daily, one toe at a time, ten seconds
- Touch ears, muzzle, tail and belly as ordinary petting
- Brush the coat even when there is nothing to brush out
- Let the puppy hear a hairdryer at a distance first
- Practice standing still on a raised surface

- Cutting nails before you have been shown where the quick sits
- Trimming near the eyes with household scissors
- Waiting for matting before you start brushing
- Making the first visit long to get your money's worth
- Assuming a puppy coat and an adult coat behave the same
On that last point: in many breeds the coat changes as the dog matures, and a puppy who never needed brushing becomes a dog who needs it weekly. If your brush starts finding tangles behind the ears or in the armpits, increase the brushing before you increase the appointments.

Can my puppy come in for a groom before they are cleared for daycare?

What happens at the meet and greet?
It is a 30-minute first-visit evaluation before daycare or boarding, so we can see how your dog handles the space and the other dogs without a full day riding on it. Book it when nothing depends on the outcome.
Is daycare too much for a four-month-old?
For some puppies, yes. A full day is long for a young dog, and a half day under four hours at $30 is often the sensible way in. Start short. If your puppy comes home flattened rather than pleasantly tired, shorten it further.
Do you groom cats, or do coloring and hand-stripping?
No to all three. No cats, and no creative coloring, show grooming or hand-stripping. If that is what you need you want a specialist, and we would rather say so than take the booking.
