Half Day or Full Day? Choosing a Daycare Schedule

Half day or full day is not really a money question. The two rates sit $5 apart. It is a question about how much stimulation your dog can absorb in one go, and how long you are actually away from the house.
Most people ask it the wrong way round: they pick the shorter option because it feels sensible, then end up leaving work early or asking a neighbor to cover the gap. Start from your day, not the price list.
Under four hours is a half day. Four hours or more is a full day. If you are commuting, you want the full day and the long window — daycare in Ronkonkoma runs 7am to 7pm, seven days a week.
What a half day is genuinely for
A half day is under four hours. It is not a discount version of a full day — it is a shorter dose, and for some dogs that is the whole point.
Puppies. A young dog at daycare is doing a lot at once: new smells, new dogs, new people, new floor surface. Three hours of that and most puppies are done. They sleep it off and are better company that evening than a puppy who spent eight hours overstimulated and came home wired rather than tired.
Seniors. An older dog often still wants the company and stops wanting the noise. A half day gives them the first part and gets them home before the room gets loud.
First-timers of any age. A short first day tells you how your dog settles without committing them to a whole day of finding out.
What a full day is genuinely for
A long day away from the house. This is the real reason most people book daycare, and it is why the wide window matters more than the rate. If you leave early and get back late, a half day does not cover you; it just changes who is watching the clock.
The adolescent. Somewhere between roughly seven months and two years, a lot of dogs develop more engine than their household can absorb. That is the dog who is genuinely better off at the end of a full day, and whose owner notices the difference at home first. Same for any dog who already knows the room — once there is a routine and a set of dogs they like, a full day is simply their day.
Start with a half day if
- Your dog is a puppy, or is getting on in years
- It is their first time at daycare
- They have been out of daycare for months
- You are home mid-afternoon anyway
Go straight to a full day if
- You are out of the house longer than four hours
- Your dog is an adolescent with more energy than outlet
- They already know the room and settle fast
- You are adding a bath to the same day
Do not pick the half day to save money
Full day is $35, half day is $30, and sales tax of 8.75% applies to both. That $5 gap is not worth building your afternoon around. If the full day fits your life better, book the full day.
The passes are where the real difference sits: five days for $162.50, ten for $300, twenty for $550. They have no expiration date, which helps if your schedule moves around, and they are non-refundable, which is why we would rather you did a few single days first.
Buy the pass after the routine exists, not to create one.
The daycare hours are not the grooming hours
Worth being plain about this one. Grooming runs 9am to 5pm. Daycare runs 7am to 7pm. Different windows, same building.
So daycare drop-off starts well before the grooming desk gets busy, and pickup runs past it. After 7pm there is a late pickup charge of $5 per fifteen minutes — not a punishment, just the honest cost of someone staying with your dog.
Daycare and boarding are at the Ronkonkoma location only, 835 Portion Rd. The East Northport salon at 16 Laurel Rd is grooming, Tuesday to Saturday, and has no daycare room — worth knowing before you plan a morning around the wrong address. Ronkonkoma is a hamlet in Suffolk County and its LIRR station is a major Main Line commuter and park-and-ride hub, which is part of why the daycare window is so wide.
Adding a bath to a daycare day
A dog who has spent the day playing comes home smelling like it. A bath on the same day is the tidiest version of the week: one trip, one dog, home clean.
The thing to plan around is that the bath has to happen inside grooming hours, 9am to 5pm. That is comfortable on a full day and tight on an early half day, so book both together and the two get scheduled against each other rather than colliding. Bath and brush runs $35 to $120 by weight; a full groom with a haircut is $70 to $155.

The actual dates, not the sticker on the fridge. Ask us what daycare needs, and read the county note below if boarding is ever on the cards.
Decide about food
Bring your own, or we can provide it at $5 per day per dog.
Book one day, not ten
The passes will still be there next week.
Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a dog boarded at a kennel to arrive with a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian: rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless the vet certifies an approved three-year vaccine — and bordetella within the previous six months. That six-month clock is the one owners most often have quietly run out of. Confirm your dog's current requirements with your vet and with us before you plan a stay.
Changing your mind later is normal
None of this is permanent. Dogs who start on half days move up as stamina builds. Adolescents who needed several days a week at eighteen months often settle into one or two by three. Seniors move back down. Tell us what you see at home — the report that matters is the one from your living room that evening, not ours at pickup.
When daycare is not the answer at all
Sometimes the honest answer is that your dog does not need daycare. They need forty minutes off leash.
The Town of Huntington runs a free-permit off-leash dog run at the Huntington Animal Shelter, 106 Deposit Road, East Northport — Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, weekends 9am to 4pm. Permits require Huntington residency, a licensed dog at least four months old with current rabies vaccination, and a limit of two dogs per visit.
And if your dog is reactive around other dogs, a full group day is the wrong tool. We will tell you so at the meet and greet.

What exactly counts as a half day?
Anything under four hours. At four hours it becomes a full day, measured from drop-off.
Can I drop off early and decide later whether it is a full day?
Tell us at drop-off what you expect, then call if things change. Days run over; that is normal and much easier to handle when we know.
Is daycare open on weekends?
Yes, seven days a week, 7am to 7pm, in Ronkonkoma. Grooming keeps different hours, 9am to 5pm, and the East Northport salon is grooming only, Tuesday to Saturday.
My dog is nine. Is she too old for daycare?
Age alone does not decide it, comfort does. Plenty of older dogs do well on half days and stop doing well on full ones. If there is stiffness, joint pain or any change in mobility, talk to your vet first — that is a medical question, not a grooming one.
Do the day passes expire?
No, the packages have no expiration date. They are non-refundable, which is why we suggest a few single days before you buy one.
