Where You Can't Walk Your Dog Near Ronkonkoma

The most useful thing anyone around here can tell you about walking your dog is not where to go. It is where you will be turned around at the gate. Within a short drive of Ronkonkoma there is a preserve that does not allow dogs at all, a state park that allows them in only one part of the property, and a town code that keeps them off the sand. None of that is obvious from the parking lot, and all of it is easier to learn before you load the car.

Caleb Smith State Park Preserve: no pets at all

Caleb Smith, in Smithtown, is a passive preserve rather than an ordinary park, and that word is doing all the work. Pets are prohibited there. So are bicycles and picnics. It is not a leash rule, and it is not a "dogs on the paved sections" rule — the dog does not come onto the property.

People get caught out because a preserve looks exactly like the kind of place a dog belongs: quiet, wooded, soft underfoot. That look is precisely why the restriction exists. If your plan for the morning was a long, calm walk with the dog, this is not the place, and no amount of good behavior changes the answer at the entrance.

Sunken Meadow: yes, but only part of it

Sunken Meadow State Park is the one that trips up careful owners, because the honest answer is "partly." Leashed dogs are allowed in the undeveloped eastern portion of the park only. They are not allowed on the beach, on the boardwalk, in the playgrounds, on the golf course, at the pools, or inside buildings.

That is a real distinction, not a technicality. The parts of Sunken Meadow most people picture when they hear the name — the boardwalk, the sand — are the parts your dog cannot use. If you go, go for the woods on the eastern side, and know where that boundary sits before you are standing at it with a hopeful dog on the end of a lead.

The mistake is rarely the leash. It's assuming that because one Suffolk park allows dogs, the one next door does too.

The tick check matters more than the walk

Blydenburgh and the eastern woods at Sunken Meadow are exactly the habitat New York State tracks for deer ticks. The state health department splits its own surveillance into two fixed windows — nymphs from May through September, adults from October through December.

The 2025 Suffolk County numbers are worth knowing without being frightened by them. Nymph density measured 61.04 ticks per 1,000 square meters, with 26.6% carrying the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. Among adults collected that autumn, 52.8% tested positive — roughly double the nymph rate. And for the record, Suffolk was not the worst county in the state: it ranked eighth for nymph density, well behind Orange County.

None of that is a reason to stay indoors. It is a reason to go through the coat properly afterward — ears, armpits, between the toes, under the collar. Thick or curly coats hide ticks well, which is why we find them at the tub more often than owners find them on the couch. If you find one embedded, or the skin around it looks angry, call your vet. That is a medical call, not a grooming one.

The other rule that turns people around: boarding

If the walk is the start of a trip and the dog is staying somewhere while you are away, there is a second rulebook waiting. Suffolk County Code § 302-13 says no dog may be accepted at a boarding kennel unless the owner provides a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian.

The certificate must show vaccination within the previous year against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus — unless the vaccine is an approved three-year vaccination certified by the vet — and against bordetella within the previous six months.

That bordetella clock is the one worth writing on the calendar. Everything else runs on a year; bordetella runs on six months, which is exactly why owners arrive with paperwork that looks current and is not. This is county law, not a policy we invented, and it applies to boarding facilities generally. Confirm current requirements with your vet and with us before you travel. It is also worth knowing that bordetella vaccination does not fully prevent kennel cough — what people call kennel cough is properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, with roughly eleven contributing pathogens per the AVMA.

Check before you go — park pages do change

Seasonal hours get revised. Preserves close sections for stewardship work. Storm damage shuts trails. Permit rules get tightened. Two minutes on the official page for the specific park is the whole job.
