Standing Grooming Appointments: Book the Year Ahead

A standing appointment is the same day, the same time, on a fixed cycle, booked out in advance so you never have to remember to make the call. It is the least glamorous thing in grooming, and for a lot of coats it is the whole difference between a trim and a shave-down.
Nobody wakes up planning to let a coat go. It happens because the six-week mark lands on a week you are travelling, and then the next opening you can make is three weeks after that, and by then the felting behind the ears has already happened. Booking the next appointment before you leave removes the decision from the process entirely.
Pick a day and time that already works in your week, book the next one before you leave with a clean dog, and repeat it on a fixed cycle. Ronkonkoma grooms seven days a week, 9am to 5pm. East Northport is Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, grooming only. If your dog has a short, flat coat, you may honestly not need any of this.
Why the same slot every six or eight weeks works
Three separate things improve, and only one of them is about the coat.
There is a health-adjacent benefit too, and it is worth being precise about. A groom is a full set of hands over every inch of a dog — ears, armpits, groin, between the pads, base of the tail. That is where ticks attach and where lumps get found. New York State's health department runs its deer tick surveillance in two fixed windows, nymphs May through September and adults October through December, and in Suffolk County in 2025 nymph density was 61.04 ticks per 1,000 square meters with 26.6% carrying the Lyme bacterium; among adults collected that October to December, 52.8% tested positive. Regular hands-on time is a real advantage during those months. To be clear about the boundary: a groomer flags what they find and tells you. Diagnosis, tick removal advice and treatment are your veterinarian's, always.
Coat types that genuinely can't skip a cycle
This is the part most guides fudge. Not every dog needs a standing appointment, and pretending otherwise is how people stop trusting the advice.

Two pieces of craft knowledge sit behind that table. A coat that has felted flat to the skin cannot be brushed out without hurting the dog, so the kind answer at that point is usually to take it short and grow it back properly on a schedule. And a healthy double coat is insulation that works in both directions — heat out in summer as well as cold out in winter — so the goal there is removing dead undercoat, not removing length. If you are unsure which category your dog falls into, ask at the table while the groomer has hands on the coat.
Lillian Ruff does not groom cats, and we do not do creative colouring, show grooming or hand-stripping. If your breed's coat is traditionally hand-stripped and you want it done that way, we are not the right salon for it and would rather tell you now than at drop-off.
How to set a standing appointment up
Pick the slot around your week, not ours
The appointment you keep is the one that already fits. A weekday morning while you are at work beats a Saturday you will eventually want back.
Agree the cycle with the groomer at the table
Four, six, eight or ten weeks depends on the actual coat in front of us and how much brushing happens at home. Ask directly: how long before this starts to tangle?
Book the next date before you leave
The easiest moment to book the next groom is while you are standing there with a clean dog and the interval fresh in your head. Booking is online at lillianruffpetspa.com/grooming, so you can do it from your phone on the way out.
Write it into the family calendar
Not just yours. Whoever might be doing the drop-off in four weeks needs to see it too.
What you do between appointments matters more than the interval
Two doodles on the identical six-week cycle can arrive in completely different condition, and the variable is almost always what happened at home. A quick pass over the top of the coat with a slicker does very little — it smooths the surface and leaves the mat sitting underneath, which is why owners are so often surprised at drop-off.
- Brush in layers, not in circles. Lift the coat with one hand and work the brush through a thin section at a time, from the skin outward, until you can see the parting.
- Then use a comb. A comb is the honest test. If a metal comb will not travel to the skin and back out again, the area is not brushed out, however good it looks.
- Go where the friction is. Behind and under the ears, the collar line, armpits, the back of the hind legs, and anywhere a harness sits. That is where mats start.
- Little and often beats a long session. Ten minutes two or three times a week keeps a curly coat holding an eight-week cycle. The same dog unbrushed will not hold six.
- Dry before you brush after a swim or a wet walk. Curly coat that dries in a tangle sets like felt.
Moving a slot when life happens
A standing appointment is a default, not a contract. Things move. What matters is how much notice the salon gets, because a slot released the night before usually stays empty and a slot released a week out usually does not.
Winter is the honest test of this. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma put average January snowfall at 10.3 inches and February at 9.4, with mean daily lows below freezing through December, January and February. Some mornings you are not driving anywhere. Let us know as early as you can, and ask about the current cancellation and rescheduling terms when you first set the appointment up so there are no surprises later. If a groom does end up slipping by a week or two, mention it when you rebook — your groomer can tell you whether to pull the following one forward rather than let two stretched cycles compound.
Grooming and daycare share one building in Ronkonkoma
At 835 Portion Rd the grooming salon, the daycare, the boarding kennels and the retail shop are all on one site. The hours are not the same for each service, so it is worth knowing them before you plan anything around them: grooming runs 9am to 5pm, and daycare runs seven days a week from 7am to 7pm.
Daycare passes run $162.50 for five days, $300 for ten and $550 for twenty. They do not expire and they are non-refundable. Sales tax of 8.75% applies. Pickup after 7pm is $5 per fifteen minutes. If your dog has not done daycare with us before, there is a 30-minute meet and greet first — ask us how to get that scheduled. Food can be provided at $5 per day per dog for daycare or boarding if you would rather not bring your own.
Long Island MacArthur Airport is here, and the Ronkonkoma LIRR station is a major Main Line commuter and park-and-ride hub, so a lot of our clients leave early and get back late. 16 Laurel Rd is grooming only, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 to 5 — closed Sunday and Monday, which is five operating days a week. Booking a repeating grooming slot works exactly the same way there. Sunday grooming, daycare and boarding exist only in Ronkonkoma.
Suffolk County Code §302-13 requires a current veterinary health certificate for any dog accepted at a boarding kennel — rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year unless a vet certifies an approved three-year vaccine, and bordetella within the previous six months. That six-month bordetella clock is the one owners most often let lapse without realising. Confirm current requirements with your vet and with us before you need them, not the week you are travelling.
What a year of grooming actually costs
The arithmetic is simple, and it is the real argument for planning the year rather than reacting to the coat. A six-week cycle is roughly eight or nine grooms a year. An eight-week cycle is roughly six or seven. Published grooming prices go by dog weight — bath and brush $35 to $120, full groom with haircut $70 to $155 — so once you know your dog's weight band and your cycle, the annual figure stops being a mystery. It becomes a number you can plan around instead of an irregular expense that turns up whenever the coat forces the issue. The best groom is the boring one — nothing has gone wrong since last time.
A fixed cycle makes sense if
- Your dog is a doodle, poodle mix, or any curly or silky coat
- You have needed a shave-down before and would rather not repeat it
- Your dog is anxious and does better with a familiar routine
- You commute and want the date locked in months ahead

- Short flat coat with no matting risk
- Your schedule genuinely changes week to week
- You are still working out which groom style you want
- You are new to us and would rather see one appointment through first

How do I work out what a year will cost?
Take your dog's published price band — bath and brush is $35 to $120 and a full groom with haircut is $70 to $155, both by weight — and multiply by the number of grooms your cycle gives you: about eight or nine a year at six weeks, six or seven at eight weeks. What if I need to move one appointment?

Can I have the same groomer every time?
Ask when you book. Continuity genuinely helps — the same hands remember last time's length, which ear is sensitive and how the dog handles the dryer — so it is worth raising rather than hoping.
Six weeks or eight?
It depends on the coat and on how much brushing happens at home. A doodle brushed properly two or three times a week can often hold eight weeks. The same dog unbrushed will not hold six. Ask your groomer at the table — they are looking at the answer.
Can my dog do daycare on a grooming day?
Both services are at 835 Portion Rd in Ronkonkoma, but they run on different hours — grooming 9 to 5, daycare 7am to 7pm — so ask us directly rather than assuming the two will line up on a given date. If your dog has never done daycare with us, the 30-minute meet and greet comes first either way. East Northport is grooming only.
