Dog Grooming and Daycare for East Islip and Islip Terrace

Long Island has a lot of parkland, and a surprising amount of it does not allow dogs at all. If you live in East Islip or Islip Terrace, that is worth sorting out before you put the dog in the car on a Saturday morning, because "we'll just take him somewhere green" is the plan that most often falls apart at the gate.
This is a practical page rather than a sales one. A good part of it is us telling you what we could not verify, which is the only honest way to write about park rules. The rest is how our Ronkonkoma salon actually works if you decide to use it.
Check the specific property's own rules page before you drive anywhere. In Suffolk, a state preserve is very often pet-free, and even a state park that welcomes leashed dogs will usually bar them from the beach, the boardwalk and the playgrounds.
Which rules apply where you live
There is no single Long Island dog rule. There are at least three separate rulebooks stacked on top of each other, and they disagree with each other constantly:
We are deliberately not going to tell you which town line your street sits on. Boundaries here do not behave the way people assume. Commack, for one, is split between two towns along Townline Road, so two neighbors on the same street can answer to different town codes. The area around Lake Ronkonkoma is likewise split across more than one town. Postal ZIPs are no help either — a ZIP routinely covers more ground than the hamlet it is named after.
To show how specific these codes get: the Town of Huntington's code (§159-20(D)) bans dogs from all its town beaches except paved areas and boardwalks, and caps leashes at six feet. That is one town's rule and it tells you nothing whatsoever about the next town over. Look up your own, and get your dog licensed while you are talking to the clerk anyway — under New York Agriculture & Markets Law §109, a dog must be licensed and rabies-vaccinated from four months of age.
Where dogs are barred, and how to spot it before you go
We will only name places whose rules we could confirm from an official source. The ones we could confirm all sit in the Smithtown area. We are not going to tell you how far that is from your door, or which way to point the car, because we have not verified it and a wrong route is worse than no route.
Confirmed dogs allowed
- Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown has a designated dog area
- Charles P. Toner Park, 148 Smithtown Blvd, Nesconset 11767 — a fenced dog park
- Sunken Meadow State Park, leashed, but only in the undeveloped eastern portion
Confirmed restricted
- Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, Smithtown — a passive preserve where pets, bikes and picnics are all banned outright
- Sunken Meadow's beaches, boardwalk, playgrounds, golf course, pools and buildings — no dogs
The pattern is the useful part, and it travels. The word preserve in a property's name is a strong hint that pets are not welcome, because a preserve is managed for habitat rather than recreation. And at a park that does allow dogs, the ban usually lands exactly where you were planning to walk: the waterfront.
We could not verify the dog rules for parks or beaches in East Islip or Islip Terrace, or for the Lake Ronkonkoma shoreline, so we are not going to name any of them or guess at what they allow. Read your own town's parks page, or call the parks department, before you go. A wrong assumption at a beach is the kind that comes with a summons.
Daycare as the practical substitute for off-leash time
Here is the honest case for daycare: legal off-leash space is genuinely scarce around here, and a fenced, supervised playgroup is the reliable version of what most people are driving around looking for. Our daycare in Ronkonkoma runs seven days a week, 7am to 7pm. That window is wide on purpose — the Ronkonkoma LIRR station is a major Main Line commuter and park-and-ride hub, and a commuting day that starts before the salon opens and ends after most places close is an ordinary day on Long Island, not an unusual one.

Passes have no expiration date and are non-refundable. Sales tax of 8.75% applies. If you would rather not pack food, we can provide it at $5 per day per dog. Pickup after 7pm is $5 per 15 minutes, which is less a penalty than a promise that somebody is standing there waiting.
Now the part that is not a pitch. Daycare suits a dog who genuinely enjoys other dogs. If yours finds a busy group stressful, a long day of it will not fix that, and a couple of good on-leash walks will do more for him than we will. Every new dog does a 30-minute meet and greet first, precisely so nobody finds this out the hard way.
The salon at 835 Portion Rd is in Ronkonkoma, a hamlet in Suffolk County and the same hamlet as Long Island MacArthur Airport. This is the full-service location: grooming, daycare, overnight boarding and the retail shop. Boarding is $60 a night in a 4x4 private kennel or $75 in a larger 4x6, and every night includes a full day of daycare at no extra charge. Check-in is 2pm to 7pm, check-out 7am to 11am, with meals at 8am, 1pm and 6pm and custom schedules available for puppies, seniors or medical diets.
Suffolk County Code §302-13 requires that a dog be accepted at a boarding kennel only with a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian, covering rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless the vaccine is an approved three-year one certified by your vet — and bordetella within the previous six months. That six-month bordetella clock is the one owners most often have let lapse without realizing. This is county law, not our house policy. Confirm current requirements with your vet and with us before you book.
Grooming, priced by your dog's weight, seven days a week
Grooming in Ronkonkoma runs 9am to 5pm, seven days a week. Pricing is published by dog weight rather than by breed, so the quote does not change because somebody wrote "doodle" on the form:
Where your dog lands inside those ranges depends on his weight, so read the published prices on the grooming page for his size rather than taking a guess from the bottom of the range. Coat condition matters too: a heavily matted coat takes longer, and it is safer handled as a shorter clip than as a rescue mission. We will talk that through with you rather than surprising you at pickup.
Things we do not do, so you are not disappointed: we do not groom cats, and we do not do creative coloring, show grooming or hand-stripping. If your breed genuinely needs hand-stripping, you want a specialist and we will say so.
If we are not the right answer for your dog, we would rather tell you at the desk than at pickup.

Do the meet and greet
Thirty minutes, for any dog new to daycare or boarding. It is an evaluation, not a formality — it is how we learn whether a group day suits your dog.
Get the vet paperwork current
Ask your vet for the health certificate, and check the bordetella date specifically. Six months, not twelve.
Tell us the awkward things
Nail sensitivity, a bad experience somewhere else, arthritis, a dog who cannot be near other dogs. None of it is a disqualification. All of it changes how we handle the day.
Questions people actually ask
Can I book just a nail trim?
The two grooming services we publish prices for are a bath and brush and a full groom with a haircut. If what you want sits outside those, ask us when you book rather than assuming — and please do book rather than driving over, because we cannot promise walk-in or same-day service.
Is daycare open on weekends?
Yes. Daycare runs seven days a week, 7am to 7pm. Grooming in Ronkonkoma is also seven days, 9am to 5pm.
My dog is anxious about grooming. Is that a problem?
It is information, not a problem. Tell us at booking and again at drop-off. We can break the groom into a shorter session, skip the parts that spike him, and stop rather than push through. If something looks medical — skin, ears, a lump, pain on handling — we will flag it and send you to your vet. We are groomers, not veterinarians, and we do not diagnose.
Do the daycare passes expire?
No expiration date. They are non-refundable, though, so buy the size you will realistically use.
Where can I legally let my dog off leash?
Fewer places than you would hope, and we could not confirm anything in East Islip or Islip Terrace specifically. What we could confirm: Charles P. Toner Park at 148 Smithtown Blvd, Nesconset is a fenced dog park, and Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown has a designated dog area. Beyond a confirmed dog park, assume leashed and read the property's own rules — Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, for instance, bans pets entirely.
Do you have another location?
Yes, a second salon at 16 Laurel Rd, East Northport, open Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. That one is grooming only — daycare, boarding and the retail shop are Ronkonkoma.
