Grooming, daycare and boarding for Farmingville dogs

Most grooming salons do one thing. That is fine until your week stops cooperating — the dog is due for a haircut, you have a long day at work on Thursday, and you are away for a weekend at the end of the month. Then you are managing three different businesses, three sets of paperwork, and three drop-off routines with a dog who has to get comfortable in each one.

Portion Road is set up so that all three happen in the same place with the same staff. A dog who already knows the building for daycare is a much easier dog to groom, and a much calmer dog to board. That is not marketing; it is just what familiarity does to a nervous animal.

GroomingBath and brush, or a full groom with a haircut. Prices published by weight.
DaycareFull day or half day, single visits or discounted passes with no expiration.
BoardingPrivate kennel, two sizes, and every night includes a full day of daycare.

Published grooming prices by weight — no quote on arrival

Very few grooming salons publish a number. You call, you describe your dog, and you get told it depends. It does depend — but it depends on something completely knowable in advance, which is how big your dog is and whether the coat is getting cut or just washed and dried.

So the ranges are public:

ServicePublished priceWhat it is
Bath & brush$35–$120Wash, dry, brush out, no haircut
Full groom with haircut$70–$155Bath, dry, and a cut or trim

The spread inside each range is weight. A small dog sits near the bottom of it, a large dog near the top, and the figure that applies to your dog appears on the grooming page when you book — before you commit, not when you arrive.

One honest caveat that applies at any salon, not just ours: if a coat turns out to be far more matted than it looked, that changes the work. Ask your groomer to talk it through with you before anything starts, so nobody is surprised at pickup.

A price you can read before you book is worth more than a low price you have to ask for.

Things we do not do

Worth saying plainly, so you do not waste a phone call. We do not groom cats. We do not do creative colouring, show grooming, or hand-stripping — if you have a wire-coated terrier whose breeder told you the coat must be stripped rather than clipped, you want a specialist, and that is not us.

Open seven days a week, including Sunday

Grooming runs 9am to 5pm every day of the week, Sunday included. That matters more than it sounds. Plenty of people can only realistically get a dog to a salon on a weekend, and a Tuesday-to-Saturday schedule quietly rules them out.

Daycare runs longer — 7am to 7pm, also seven days. Late pickup after 7pm is $5 per fifteen minutes, which we would rather tell you now than at the door.

Daycare while you're at work, boarding while you're away

Daycare pricing is published the same way grooming is:

OptionPriceNote
Full day, 4+ hours$35Single visit
Half day, under 4 hours$30Single visit
5-day pass$162.50Saves $12.50
10-day pass$300Saves $50
20-day pass$550Saves $150

Passes do not expire, which is the right structure for a dog who comes twice one month and six times the next. They are non-refundable. Sales tax of 8.75% applies.

Boarding is $60 a night for a regular 4x4 private kennel and $75 a night for a premium 4x6. Every overnight stay includes a full day of daycare at no extra charge, so a boarded dog is not sitting in a kennel all day waiting for you. Check-in is 2:00pm to 7:00pm and check-out is 7:00am to 11:00am. Meals go out at 8am, 1pm and 6pm, and custom schedules are available for puppies, seniors, or dogs on a medical diet. Bring your own food, or we can provide it at $5 per day per dog.

Two limits worth knowing before you plan a trip

Boarding eligibility, in the salon's own words: "Pet must be non-aggressive, comfortable in a kennel, able to socialize, and free from bite history." And if your dog needs medication given outside 7am–10pm, tell us when you enquire — that timing is a genuine limitation, not a formality.

Suffolk County

Boarding kennels in Suffolk County are governed by County Code § 302-13. Before a dog can be accepted, the owner has to provide a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian showing vaccination against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless the vet has certified an approved three-year vaccine — plus bordetella within the previous six months. That six-month bordetella clock is the one owners most often have lapsed without realising, because everything else runs annually. This is county law, not a house rule. Confirm the current requirements with your vet and with us before you book.

Worth adding, since it comes up: bordetella does not fully prevent kennel cough. What people call kennel cough is canine infectious respiratory disease complex, and the AVMA counts roughly eleven contributing pathogens. The vaccine narrows the odds; it does not switch them off. Anything that looks like illness is a vet conversation, not a groomer conversation.

Booking, and what to bring on a first visit

1

Book online

Grooming appointments go through the booking system on the grooming page, with the price for your dog's weight shown before you confirm.

2

Do the meet and greet

Daycare and boarding start with a 30-minute first-visit evaluation. It is short, and it is how we find out whether your dog is genuinely happy in a group setting.

3

Get the paperwork right

Vet records, dated. Check the bordetella date specifically — six months, not twelve.

4

Pack light

Food if you are bringing your own, plus any medication with clear written timing. You do not need to send bedding or toys.

Questions people actually ask

Are you open on Sunday?

Yes. Grooming runs 9am to 5pm seven days a week, and daycare runs 7am to 7pm seven days a week.

Will I know the grooming price before I arrive?

Yes. Bath and brush is $35 to $120 and a full groom with haircut is $70 to $155, set by your dog's weight, and the applicable figure shows on the booking page before you confirm.

Does boarding include daycare, or is that extra?

Included. Every night of boarding comes with a full day of daycare at no extra charge.

What vaccinations does my dog need to board?

Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a current vet health certificate covering rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the past year — or an approved three-year vaccine certified by your vet — and bordetella within the past six months. Confirm the current list with your vet.

Do you groom cats, or do hand-stripping?

Neither. No cats, no hand-stripping, no show grooming, no creative colouring.

Can I buy daycare days in advance?

Yes — 5, 10 and 20-day passes are available, they have no expiration date, and they are non-refundable.
