A thick coat can still be wet against the skin hours after it feels dry to your hand. That one fact explains most of what walks through our door: the coat that has packed down tight, the damp smell that will not shift, the mats that appear behind the ears seemingly overnight. Drying is the part people underestimate, and it is the part a salon is actually for.
This page is written for people in Bayport and Blue Point looking at our Ronkonkoma location. Ronkonkoma is our full-service site — dog grooming, doggy daycare, overnight boarding and the retail shop — and it is open seven days a week. Below: what a groomer genuinely adds over a bath at home, when you do not need to book at all, and how an overnight stay works.
Rinsing and brushing at home does more good than people think. Come to us when the coat needs to be dried properly down to the skin, when it is matting, or when the dog needs somewhere to stay. A bath and brush is not a monthly obligation for every dog.
Which coat you have changes everything
A single-coated dog — a poodle, a Maltese, plenty of the doodle crosses that only inherited one coat type — has hair that behaves more or less like yours. Water runs off it and out of it. If that dog swims or gets caught in the rain, a plain fresh-water rinse and a towel handles most of the damage.
A double coat is a different animal. Shepherds, huskies, labs, retrievers and any of the mixes carrying that woolly layer underneath have guard hairs on top and dense undercoat beneath. That undercoat behaves like a sponge with a lid on it. It holds water. It holds grit, pond silt, dried salt and whatever the dog rolled in, because the top coat will not let any of it shake back out. None of that is urgent. It is cumulative, and it is how a soft coat becomes a packed one.
Then there is the coat that never stops growing — doodles, shih tzus, bichons, most of the poodle crosses. Those dogs need a haircut on a schedule no matter what else is going on, because the hair does not shed out on its own.
Home care that genuinely helps
- Rinse with plain fresh water — no shampoo needed
- Get the belly, the armpits and the backs of the legs, which is where debris collects
- Flush the paws and between the pads
- Wipe the outer ear only; do not go down into it
- Brush little and often, right down to the skin
What home care will not do
- Move grit out of a packed undercoat
- Dry a thick coat at skin level
- Lift the dead undercoat that is holding everything in place
- Fix matting that has already formed behind the ears or in the tail
Why towel-drying a thick coat is not drying it
Here is the thing that changes how it goes. When you towel a double-coated dog, you dry the outside. The undercoat stays wet, and it stays wet for a long time, insulated by the very coat you just dried. The dog feels dry to your hand and is not.
A coat that feels dry on the outside can still be soaked against the skin.
Damp undercoat plus warmth plus friction is how coats tighten and how odor sets in. A salon dry is a different process from anything you can do at home: a high-velocity dryer pushes the water and the loose undercoat out of the coat rather than heating it off. On a big dog it is usually the longest part of the appointment, and it is the part you are really paying for.
Rinse and wash
Grit and dried salt come off first, so the shampoo reaches the skin instead of sitting on top of debris.
Force-dry
The dryer separates the coat and blows water and dead undercoat out of it. This is the step a towel cannot replicate.
Brush and comb through
Once it is genuinely dry, a comb has to reach skin everywhere. Where it cannot, we tell you exactly where the trouble spots are.
The once-over
A groom is the most thorough look anyone gives your dog all month. Anything red, raw, sore or lumpy gets pointed out to you — not treated by us. If you want particular extras handled, say so when you book and ask what the service you have chosen includes.
If a coat is matted tight to the skin, brushing it out is slow and painful and often worse for the dog than a short cut. We will tell you straight if that is where we have ended up, and we will say it before we start rather than after. We are groomers, not vets — irritated skin, a hot spot, an ear that smells or a lump under the coat is a vet visit, and we will say that too.
Boarding and daycare at Ronkonkoma
The other half of the job is the days the dog cannot come with you. Boarding at Ronkonkoma comes in two kennel sizes, and every overnight stay includes full-day daycare at no extra charge, so the dog is not sitting in a kennel all day.
Feeding runs at 8am, 1pm and 6pm, and custom schedules are available for puppies, seniors or medical diets. Bring your own food, or we can provide it at $5 a day per dog. One real limitation to know up front: medications that have to be given outside 7am to 10pm are beyond what we can cover. A first visit starts with a 30-minute meet and greet, so the dog is not arriving cold on the day.
Eligibility, plainly stated: a boarding dog needs to be non-aggressive, comfortable in a kennel, able to socialize, and free from bite history. If that does not sound like your dog, tell us at the meet and greet rather than at drop-off.
The vaccination rule that catches people out
This is Suffolk County law, not our house policy. Under Suffolk County Code § 302-13, a boarding kennel cannot accept a dog unless the owner provides a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian covering the following:

Bordetella is the one that trips everyone. It runs on a six-month clock while everything else runs on a year, so a dog who is genuinely up to date on shots can still be out of date for boarding. Check that one early, and confirm current requirements with your vet and with us — rules and records change.
Worth knowing: bordetella does not fully prevent kennel cough. What people call kennel cough is properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, and the AVMA counts roughly eleven pathogens that contribute to it. The vaccine reduces risk. It is not a guarantee, and no honest facility will tell you otherwise.

Daycare is open seven days, 7am to 7pm, at $35 for a full day (4+ hours) or $30 for a half day, with 5-, 10- and 20-day passes that do not expire. Late daycare pickup after 7pm is $5 per 15 minutes. Grooming is priced by the dog's weight, and both services are published as ranges rather than a single flat number:

For most double-coated dogs the bath and brush is the right choice — you do not want a husky or a shepherd clipped, you want the dead coat out of it. A doodle or any coat that keeps growing is the one that needs the haircut. If you are not sure which yours is, describe the coat when you book. That is a thirty-second conversation, not a consultation.
Seven-day opening, and how to book
Ronkonkoma grooming is open seven days a week, 9am to 5pm, which is the practical difference for a household whose weekdays are already spoken for. Boarding check-out runs 7am to 11am, so a weekend-morning collection on your way back from wherever you have been is a normal thing to do.

Questions people actually ask
How often does my dog actually need a groomer?
Less often than you would guess if you are brushing and rinsing at home. Many double-coated dogs do well with a proper bath and full dry every few months, more often if the coat is packing down or holding a damp smell. Coats that keep growing need a haircut on a schedule regardless. If your dog is not matting and does not smell, you do not need to book.
What exactly is included in a bath and brush?
The published price covers the bath, the full dry and the brush-out, with the range set by your dog's weight. Anything beyond that, ask about when you book — the service list on the booking page is the accurate answer, and we would rather you knew the number before you arrive than after.
My dog swims. Does that change anything?
For a single coat, not much — a fresh-water rinse afterwards handles most of it. For a double coat it matters more, because the undercoat holds water and grit and takes a long time to dry through. If the skin underneath is red, raw, flaky or sore, that is a vet question rather than a grooming one. We will flag what we see; we do not diagnose or treat skin.
Can I board and have the dog groomed in the same stay?
Grooming and boarding are both at the Ronkonkoma location, so it is one trip rather than two. Raise it while you are arranging the stay so the appointment lands inside your dates.
Do you board at East Northport too?
No. East Northport, at 16 Laurel Rd, is grooming only and runs Tuesday to Saturday. Daycare, boarding and the retail shop are Ronkonkoma only.
What do I need to bring for an overnight stay?
The vet health certificate covering the Suffolk County vaccinations listed above, your dog's food if you are bringing your own, and written feeding and medication instructions. Medications needing timing outside 7am to 10pm we cannot cover.
