Why We Might Say Your Dog Isn't Right for Daycare

Some days the most useful thing we can tell an owner is that group daycare is not the right room for their dog. It is not a judgment, and it is not a polite way of saying your dog is bad. It means we watched him for half an hour and we do not think a room full of loose dogs is where he will have a good day.
Daycare gets sold as a universal good — tire the dog out, socialize him, fix the boredom. It works beautifully for a lot of dogs. For a meaningful minority it is the wrong tool, and the dog pays for finding that out late.
Every dog does a 30-minute meet and greet before joining daycare. If we say no, we will tell you exactly what we saw, and we will point you at boarding, at grooming, or at something outside our building that suits your dog better.
The dogs group daycare genuinely doesn't suit
There is no single profile. But after enough evaluations, the same handful of pictures keep coming back.
Owners argue with the middle two, and fairly, because at home the dog is lovely. He is lovely. Home has one dog in it.
A dog who tolerates a room is not the same as a dog who enjoys one, and tolerating is not what you are paying for.
Age, arousal and the adolescent problem
The most common honest "not right now" we give is not about temperament at all. It is about age.
Somewhere between roughly seven months and two years, a lot of dogs get bigger, faster and far worse at reading other dogs than they were at four months. The puppy who was welcome everywhere becomes the adolescent who body-slams a senior and cannot hear you calling. Nothing has gone wrong. He is a teenager.
Arousal is the part people miss. An over-aroused dog looks like a happy dog from the doorway: bouncing, wagging, mouth open. Fifteen minutes later the wag is stiff and high, the mouth is closed, and he is fixating on one particular dog. That is not play any more, and a handler who is not watching for the turn will not catch it.
Reads well in a group

Reads badly in a group
- Cannot disengage from one particular dog

- Comes home wired rather than tired
A dog who has suddenly become short-tempered with other dogs, or who reacts when touched in one spot, may be in pain. We are groomers, not vets — we will tell you what we saw, and the next conversation is with your veterinarian.
What we offer instead
Being told no on daycare does not mean being told no on everything. In most cases there is a version of the same day that works.

Boarding is the option owners forget. Stays are in a private kennel, feeding runs at 8am, 1pm and 6pm, and custom schedules are available for puppies, seniors and medical diets. Every stay includes full-day daycare at no extra charge — a real benefit for a sociable dog, and something to discuss honestly with us if yours is not.
Boarding has its own published bar: a dog must be non-aggressive, comfortable in a kennel, able to socialize, and free from bite history. A shy dog usually clears that. A dog who cannot be handled safely does not.
Our Laurel Road salon does grooming and nothing else, Tuesday through Saturday. Daycare and boarding both run out of Ronkonkoma. If you are in East Northport, Commack, Elwood or Northport and you want your dog groomed but not put in a group, book grooming at Laurel Road and that is the whole visit.
Why turning dogs away is the point
A daycare that takes every dog is not being generous. It is deferring a decision, and the dog who pays is usually not the one who caused it — it is the ten-year-old across the room who got flattened by an adolescent nobody watched closely enough.
Every no is a yes to the dogs already in the room. It also means that when we say your dog is a good fit, the sentence carries weight, because we are visibly willing to say the other thing.
How to talk to us about a nervous or reactive dog
The single most useful thing you can do is stop managing our impression of your dog. We are not grading you.
Tell us the bad day, in detail
What happened, how close the other dog was, what your dog did with his mouth and body, and how long he took to come back down.
Tell us what he is like at the vet
How a dog behaves when a stranger handles him on a table is far more predictive for us than how he is at a park.
Book the meet and greet and let it be honest
Thirty minutes, first visit. Do not exercise him into exhaustion beforehand to make him look calm — that only shows us a tired dog.
Ask us what we saw
You will get a straight answer, and if it is a no, you will get the reason and the alternative in the same breath.
Questions people actually ask
Does a no mean my dog is aggressive?
Usually not. Most declines are fear, arousal or age, not aggression. A frightened dog and a pushy adolescent get the same answer for completely different reasons, and both answers can change.
My dog is fine at the dog run — why would daycare be different?
The Town of Huntington's off-leash run on Deposit Road in East Northport is open air, and you are standing right there able to leave in ten seconds. Daycare is indoors, longer, and you are not there. Plenty of dogs are great at one and unhappy at the other.
Can we start with a half day?
Often the right call. A half day is under four hours at $30, a full day is four hours or more at $35, and sales tax of 8.75% applies. Late pickup after 7pm is $5 per 15 minutes.
What do you need before a boarding stay?
Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian covering rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless it is an approved three-year vaccine certified by your vet — plus bordetella within the previous six months. Bordetella is the one people are most often lapsed on, because it runs on a six-month clock. Confirm current requirements with your vet and with us before you travel.
Will you still groom a dog you won't take for daycare?
Almost always, yes. Grooming is one dog, one groomer, and a lot of dogs who cannot cope with a room cope fine on a table. Bath and brush runs $35 to $120 and a full groom with haircut $70 to $155, both by weight.
Can we try again later?
Yes. Adolescence in particular passes. If we said no at eleven months, come back and ask us again — we will re-evaluate rather than hold the old answer against him.
