Last-Minute Dog Boarding in Ronkonkoma: What We Need

Nobody plans this one. A parent goes into the hospital, a funeral gets set for Thursday, a pipe lets go and the floor comes up. All of a sudden the dog is the problem you had no time to budget for. This page is the short version of what we need from you, so the phone call takes four minutes instead of forty.
Call the Ronkonkoma salon rather than emailing. Have three things ready: current vaccination records, a realistic check-in time, and an honest description of how your dog does in a kennel. Those three decide the answer more than anything else.
Call, don't email — a same-day need requires a person
A contact form sits in an inbox until somebody opens it. If you need an answer today, you need a voice. Our number is on the contact page, and Ronkonkoma is open seven days a week.
Have these in front of you when you dial. It is the whole intake, and most of it you already know:
- The nights you need, and roughly what time you can get here.
- Your dog's breed or best guess, weight, age, and whether he is spayed or neutered.
- Vaccination dates — especially the bordetella date, which is the one that usually trips people up.
- Any medication, what it is for, and the times of day it has to be given.
- Whether your dog has ever been crated or kenneled, and how that went.
- Your vet's name and phone number.
We would rather tell you no in five minutes than give you a maybe that falls apart at six o'clock, when you have no other plan and no time left to make one. So answer the temperament questions straight. Nobody is judging a dog who hates a kennel — we just cannot find that out for the first time at check-in.
The three things that decide whether we can say yes
If your dog has never stayed with us, there is a fourth item: the meet and greet, a thirty-minute first-visit evaluation. It is short, but it is real, and it has to happen before a first overnight. Ask about it on the phone and we will tell you honestly what is possible for your dates. What we will not do is promise a same-day bed to a dog we have never met and then discover at drop-off that it was never going to work.
Vaccination records when your vet's office is closed
This is where most last-minute stays actually stall. Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a boarding kennel to have a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian before a dog can be accepted. Here is what that certificate has to cover:

Bordetella runs on a shorter schedule than everything else on that list. Plenty of owners are current on all of it except bordetella and have no idea, because the annual visit felt like it covered everything. Check that date first. It is the single most common reason a booking cannot go ahead.
If the office is closed, you are not necessarily stuck. Work down this list before you assume the worst.
Look on your phone first
Many people photographed the certificate at the last visit and forgot. Search your photos for the month of your dog's last checkup before you call anyone.
Try the practice's client portal
If your vet uses an online portal or an app for appointment reminders, vaccination history is often downloadable there at two in the morning without a human being involved.
Call the voicemail anyway
Closed-office recordings frequently give an emergency line or a covering practice. Records requests are sometimes handled faster than you would expect.
Ask wherever your dog stayed last
Suffolk County requires boarding facilities to keep records on each dog for twelve months from the last day of use. If your dog boarded anywhere in the past year, that paperwork should still exist.
Have it sent to us directly
Emailed or faxed straight from the practice is cleanest. A clear photo of the certificate is usually workable — a rabies tag on the collar is not, since the tag is a number, not a record.
What to bring if you have ten minutes to pack
Ten minutes is enough. Grab the first column and walk out the door.
Bring
- Vaccination records, on paper or on your phone
- Medications in their original labeled containers, with the times written down
- Food, measured per meal if you can manage it
- Collar with ID and a leash
- Two phone numbers — yours and someone who can decide if you cannot be reached
- Your vet's name and number
Do not hold up the drop-off for
- The bed. It is nice to have and it is not worth twenty minutes of searching
- A specific toy that has gone missing
- Food, if finding it is what is delaying you — we can provide it for $5 a day per dog
- A bath first. Grooming is a separate booking and it is not a condition of boarding
One thing worth a sentence on the phone rather than a surprise at check-in: medication timing. Our feeding schedule runs at 8am, 1pm and 6pm, and custom schedules are available for puppies, seniors or medical diets. But anything that has to be given outside 7am to 10pm is a genuine limitation on our end. Tell us what the schedule is and we will tell you plainly whether we can meet it.
Open seven days, including the day you didn't plan for
Regular boarding is a 4x4 private kennel at $60 a night. Premium is a larger 4x6 private kennel at $75. Every stay includes full-day daycare at no extra charge, which matters more than the price difference on a stressful week — your dog is not sitting in a room all day waiting for you.
What seven-day opening does not mean is around the clock. Check-in runs from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. If you are calling at nine at night, the realistic answer is a morning conversation and an afternoon check-in, not tonight. Knowing that now is better than driving over to find out.
If you usually come to us on Laurel Road, note that East Northport is grooming only, Tuesday through Saturday. Boarding and daycare happen at Ronkonkoma, 835 Portion Rd. Same business, different building — but the records, the meet and greet and the check-in all belong to the Ronkonkoma side, so start the call there.
The thing to do before you ever need this
Here is the honest advice, and it costs us a booking today to give it. The owners who get a yes on short notice are almost always the ones who are already in the system — the dog has done a meet and greet, the records are on file, and we know how he handles a kennel. Nothing about that has to wait for a crisis.
If you have an aging parent, a job that travels, or simply a suspicion that a week like this is coming, book one daycare day and do the evaluation while nothing is wrong. It takes half an hour on a calm Tuesday. Then the emergency call is a scheduling question rather than a paperwork question, and those two calls end very differently.
The dogs we can help fastest are the ones we already met on an ordinary day.
Questions people actually ask
My dog has never boarded anywhere. Can you still take him on short notice?
Possibly, but the thirty-minute meet and greet has to happen before a first overnight, and space has to be open. Call and ask about your specific dates. We would rather work out on the phone that it cannot happen than have you find out at the door.
My vet is closed and I cannot get the certificate. Can you make an exception?
No. The vaccination requirement comes from Suffolk County Code § 302-13, not from salon policy, and a boarding kennel cannot accept a dog without it. Work the list above — photos, client portal, the closed-office voicemail, and any facility your dog stayed at in the past twelve months. Confirm current requirements with your vet as well.
He had his bordetella last year. Is that current?
Not for boarding. The county requires bordetella within the previous six months, while the rest of the list runs on a one-year clock — or an approved three-year vaccine certified by your veterinarian. Check that date before you check anything else.
Does bordetella mean my dog cannot catch kennel cough?
No, and it is worth knowing. What people call kennel cough is properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, and the AVMA describes roughly eleven contributing pathogens. The vaccine covers one of them. If your dog develops a cough, that is a conversation for your veterinarian, not for us.
Do I have to bring food?
No. We can provide food at $5 a day per dog for both boarding and daycare. That said, a sudden change of diet does not suit every dog, so if yours is particular, bring your own measured out per meal — meals go out at 8am, 1pm and 6pm.
Is daycare included, or is it extra on top of the nightly rate?
Included. Every boarding stay comes with full-day daycare at no extra charge. Daycare itself runs 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, and if you are collecting from a daycare-only day after 7pm there is a $5 charge per fifteen minutes.
