Just Moved to Ronkonkoma? Your Dog's Routine, Sorted

Moving is the one month where you pick every provider your dog will have for the next decade — vet, groomer, daycare, the place they stay when you travel — and you pick them all surrounded by boxes. Here is the dog half of a new Ronkonkoma address, in the order it needs doing.

First: work out which town your new address is actually in

"Ronkonkoma, NY 11779" is a postal address. It tells the mail carrier where to go. It does not tell you which municipality you live in.

Ronkonkoma is an unincorporated hamlet in Suffolk County, and the area around the lake is divided among more than one town. Two houses on the same road can sit either side of a town line. That matters, because the town — not the county, not the state — issues your dog license, sets the rules in its own parks, and runs the shelter your dog ends up at if they get loose.

So don't take a neighbor's word for it. Check the deed, the closing paperwork or the property tax bill, or read the address to a clerk's office over the phone. Five minutes once.

Dog license and rabies paperwork after a move

New York requires a dog to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies from four months of age, under Agriculture & Markets Law § 109. Licenses are issued locally, by your town or village clerk — which is why the section above comes first. An out-of-state tag does not carry over.

Expect to need proof of a current rabies vaccination, plus proof of spay or neuter if it applies, since that usually changes the fee. Confirm the exact list with your clerk before you drive over.

Finding a groomer, and what a published price means

Grooming is priced by the dog, not the clock. Ours is published by weight, because weight is the honest driver of how long a dog takes.

A range that wide is not evasion — a nine-pound Maltese and a ninety-pound Newfoundland are different jobs. Wherever you call, the useful question is not "how much," it is "how much for a dog this size and coat, and what would change that number." Be honest about the last groom, too: if it has been eight months and the coat is packed to the skin, saying so at booking is what gets enough time into the appointment.

Daycare for the first month of a new commute

The first month in a new house is the month your dog is alone the most and understands the least. And if you have just picked up a commute out of the Ronkonkoma station — a major Main Line and park-and-ride hub — the day got longer at both ends. Daycare here runs seven days a week, 7am to 7pm.

Passes don't expire, which suits a month when you can't predict your own schedule — but they are non-refundable, so buy the size you'll actually use rather than the biggest discount. Sales tax of 8.75% applies. Pickup after 7pm is $5 per 15 minutes, better known before a train is held up than after. Food is $5 per day if you'd rather not pack it.

Everyone starts with a 30-minute meet and greet. It is a real evaluation: it is where we find out whether your dog enjoys a group, or would be happier with a walk and a quiet house.

Some dogs love daycare. Some dogs tolerate it. Knowing which one you have is worth more than the discount on a 20-day pass.

Boarding for the trip back to wherever you came from

Almost every new mover takes a trip back within the first year — a holiday, a closing, a wedding you already said yes to. Sort the boarding before you book the flight, because there is paperwork attached and it runs on a clock.

An early flight is the thing to plan around. If you are wheels-up before check-out opens, you need an extra night at the front — decide that when you book, not at 5am with a suitcase in the hall.

The Suffolk County rule that catches people out

This is county law, not house policy. Suffolk County Code § 302-13 says no dog may be accepted at a boarding kennel unless the owner provides a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian showing vaccination against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless the vaccine is an approved three-year one, certified by the vet — and against bordetella within the previous six months.

Two caveats. The bordetella vaccine does not fully prevent kennel cough — properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, roughly eleven contributing pathogens per the AVMA — so anything resembling illness is a vet question. And boarding has limits: a dog must be non-aggressive, comfortable in a kennel, able to socialize and free from bite history, and medication needed outside 7am to 10pm is a real constraint.
