Frenchies, Pugs and Bulldogs in Summer Daycare

A French Bulldog, a pug or an English Bulldog can have a good day in daycare in August. They just cannot have the same day a Labrador has. Almost all of the difference comes down to heat, and heat is one of the few things a daycare day can genuinely be built around — if you tell us what we need to know first.
In hot weather, book the half day rather than the full one, drop off early inside the 7am–7pm window, and tell us how your dog breathes at rest and after exercise before the first visit. If your dog was already working hard to breathe at home that morning, keep them home and call your vet instead.
Why flat-faced dogs overheat faster than the rest of the room
Dogs shed heat mainly by panting. Air moves fast over the moist surfaces of the nose, mouth and throat, and evaporation carries heat out. That is the whole cooling system, and in a short-muzzled dog it is the same system that is already crowded.
Selective breeding shortened the face without shortening much of the soft tissue inside it. So you get narrow nostrils, a long soft palate in a short space, and in many bulldogs a narrower windpipe than body size would suggest. A Frenchie asked to cool down has to push more air through a smaller pipe than a same-sized dog with a long nose.
Body shape adds to it. Dense, muscular, front-heavy dogs are poor swimmers, so the usual "let them cool off in water" answer is not automatically safe for this group. And a black or brindle coat in direct sun does no favors on the walk from the car.
What changes on a hot day
The single most useful adjustment is length. A half day is under four hours and costs $30 against $35 for the full day, which means the cheaper option is also usually the better one for a flat-faced dog in summer. If your dog does well on that, you can build up. If your dog comes home flat and sleeps for eighteen hours, that is information, not a badge.
The second adjustment is timing. Daycare runs 7am to 7pm, and an early drop-off keeps both car rides out of the hottest part of the day. Day passes have no expiration date, so there is no pressure to burn one on a day that does not suit your dog. Sales tax of 8.75% applies to the published rates.
Worth doing
- Book the half day and see how your dog looks that evening
- Drop off early rather than at midday
- Walk to the door across grass where you can, not baking asphalt
- Say something at the door if the ride over was hot or the air conditioning is broken
- Bring your own food, or add ours at $5 per day, if your dog gets fussy in heat
Worth skipping
- A morning at the dog park followed by an afternoon of daycare
- The extra lap around the block before drop-off
- Any errand that leaves a flat-faced dog in a parked car, even briefly
- A brand-new experience stacked on another brand-new experience
- Assuming a dog who coped fine two summers ago will cope the same now
Wrinkle and tail-pocket care between grooms
Heat and humidity do not create skin folds, but they do make them harder to keep dry, and a damp fold is where trouble starts. Pugs and English Bulldogs carry facial wrinkles and a nose rope. Frenchies and many bulldogs also have a tail pocket — a small recessed fold under a tight, low-set tail that a lot of owners have never been shown.
Wipe, gently
A soft damp cloth or a plain, unscented wipe through each fold. No scrubbing. You are lifting debris out, not disinfecting a countertop.
Dry, thoroughly
This is the step that matters most and the one people skip. Pat every fold dry with a dry cloth or cotton pad until it genuinely feels dry, not just less wet.
Find the tail pocket
Lift the tail and feel underneath for a recess. If your dog has one, it needs the same wipe-and-dry as the face, and it is the spot most likely to be missed for months.
Look while you are in there
You are checking for redness, moisture that keeps coming back, a smell, or your dog flinching. Between May and September, when the state tracks deer tick nymphs, folds and armpits are also worth a quick look after time outside.
Stop when it stops being routine
Daily maintenance is your job. Anything sore, weeping or smelling is your vet's.
Red, raw, smelly or painful skin in a fold is a medical problem, not a grooming problem. We will point it out and we will work around it, but we cannot diagnose it or treat it. That is a vet visit.
Signs that mean keep your dog home today
Nobody is going to be annoyed with you for canceling. It is far easier for everyone than the alternative.
- Breathing that is noticeably noisier at rest than your dog's own normal
- Already panting hard indoors before you have gone anywhere
- A cough, a snotty nose, or the tail end of a respiratory infection
- Vomiting or diarrhea in the last twenty-four hours
- Recent airway surgery, or any recovery period your vet has set
- A dog who is unusually quiet, wobbly or reluctant to stand up
Bright red, pale or bluish gums or tongue, distress that does not settle when the dog rests in a cool room, staggering or collapse — treat that as a veterinary emergency and go straight to a vet. Do not drive to a groomer or a daycare with a dog in that state.
Telling us about your dog's breathing before you book
First visits to daycare and boarding start with a 30-minute Meet and Greet evaluation. That is the right moment to be blunt about your dog's airway, and it is genuinely more useful than anything written on a form.
Tell us what your dog's normal sounds like, because "he snorts" covers a very wide range. Tell us how long it takes to settle after stairs or a short walk. Tell us if there has ever been an episode of collapse, gagging, or gums changing color. Tell us about any airway surgery and when it was. Tell us if your dog walks in a harness rather than a collar, and if the answer is "he pulls and then chokes himself," say that too.
The owners who tell us their dog struggles are the ones whose dogs have the easiest days.
Two practical notes for boarding. Meals run at 8am, 1pm and 6pm, with custom schedules available for puppies, seniors and medical diets, and medications that must be given outside 7am to 10pm are a limitation we cannot work around. Every boarding night includes a full day of daycare at no extra charge — for a flat-faced dog, that is worth discussing rather than assuming, because a quieter stay may suit them better.
Booking a summer bath that helps rather than stresses
Short-coated flat-faced dogs are the easiest grooming appointment we do and the one most often over-bought. Most of them need a bath, a proper dry, ears, nails and the folds done — not a haircut.

Every four to six weeks suits most of them in summer, with your own wipe-and-dry routine covering the gaps. Book a morning slot in hot weather, and keep the visit as the only outing that day. A groomer with hands on the same dog every few weeks tends to notice a change in skin, ears or nails before an owner does, which is most of the value of a standing appointment.
The Laurel Road salon at 16 Laurel Rd is grooming only, Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. Daycare and boarding run at Ronkonkoma, 835 Portion Rd, seven days a week. Worth knowing locally: the Town of Huntington off-leash dog run at 106 Deposit Road is in East Northport, open to Huntington residents with a town permit, and it is exactly the kind of place a Frenchie will happily overheat on a hot afternoon. If your dog has been there in the morning, that is the day for a quiet evening, not a second outing.
Questions people actually ask
Is group daycare safe for a French Bulldog in summer?
For many of them, yes, with a shorter day and honest information from you. For some, no. The 30-minute Meet and Greet exists so that decision gets made by people watching your specific dog rather than by a breed label. If your dog is not a fit, we will tell you.
Do you have daycare in East Northport?
No. East Northport is grooming only, Tuesday to Saturday. Daycare and boarding are at the Ronkonkoma location, 835 Portion Rd, open seven days from 7am to 7pm for daycare.
My pug snores and snorts constantly. Is that normal?
It is common in the breed, which is not the same as fine. We are groomers, so we cannot assess an airway. Bring it up with your vet, especially if the noise has gotten louder, if recovery after mild exercise is taking longer, or if your dog has ever gagged or collapsed.
What vaccinations do you need for boarding?
Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian showing vaccination against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless it is an approved three-year vaccine certified by your vet — plus bordetella within the previous six months. Bordetella is the one that catches people out, because it runs on a six-month clock while everything else runs on twelve. Confirm current requirements with your vet and with us before you book.
Does the bordetella shot mean my dog cannot catch kennel cough?
No. What people call kennel cough is properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, and the AVMA lists roughly eleven contributing pathogens. Bordetella covers one of the main ones. That matters more for a flat-faced dog than most, because a respiratory infection lands on an airway with less room to spare — which is why we would rather you kept a coughing dog home.
Can I bring my dog's own food?
Yes, and for a fussy or sensitive dog that is the better option. If you would rather not, food can be provided at $5 per day per dog.
