Flight Delayed? What Happens to Your Dog's Boarding Stay
Lillian Ruff Pet Spa
You are at a gate three states away, the board has flipped to tomorrow morning, and four seconds later the real thought arrives: what happens to my dog. Here is the answer, plainly — because it is the question people skip at drop-off and then lie awake over.
Tell us as soon as the delay is real. The stay simply gets one more night at the same nightly rate, with another full day of daycare included, and you collect between 7 and 11am. Nothing about the stay changes except its length.
Tell us as soon as you know — that is the whole system
There is no clever mechanism behind this. The one thing that makes a delayed return easy is a message from you before pickup morning, rather than a silent no-show at nine o'clock. You do not need to know your new flight, and you do not need to have rebooked. "I am stuck in Charlotte, I am not making tomorrow morning, I will confirm when I know more" is enough to work with. It turns a problem into an admin note.
Message us the moment the delay is real
Not when it is confirmed, not when you have rebooked. The moment you know you are not making the pickup window.
Send it even if it is the middle of the night here
Daycare opens at 7am seven days a week in Ronkonkoma, so an overnight message is read before the first pickup of the day.
Say roughly when you now expect to land
A range is fine. It tells us whether we are adding one night or two, and whether your dog's food needs stretching.
Confirm once you have a real arrival time
Then pick a check-out slot between 7 and 11am on the new day.
How an extra night gets added to a stay already in progress
An added night is billed exactly like the nights either side of it. There is no penalty rate and no charge for the disruption, because from our side it is the same dog in the same kennel doing the same day.
| Line item | What it costs | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Regular kennel, 4x4 | $60 per night | Same rate for the added night |
| Premium kennel, 4x6 | $75 per night | Same rate for the added night |
| Daycare on the added day | Included | Every boarding night includes a full day of daycare |
| Food, if yours has run out | $5 per day, per dog | Meals stay on the 8am, 1pm and 6pm schedule |
Sales tax of 8.75% applies as it does to the rest of the stay.
The food line is worth thinking about at drop-off, not at the gate. Owners tend to pack meals to the exact day. Pack two spare and a delay costs you nothing extra. If you did not, we can feed ours at $5 a day on the same three-meal rhythm — but a sudden food change on top of a longer stay is more upheaval than a dog needs.
Pack two extra meals. It is the cheapest travel insurance in the building.
Who we contact if we can't reach you
Sometimes the delay is not one you can text about. Phones die, roaming refuses to cooperate, and people do end up somewhere with no signal for a day. So if a pickup morning passes with no word, we try you first — the number on the boarding form, then any second number on it. If nothing comes back by the afternoon, we call the emergency contact you listed. By then your dog has been fed, has been out in daycare, and is entirely accounted for. It is not a crisis call. It is a "we have not heard from your person, do you know anything" call.
Which is why the emergency contact field is not a formality. It is also the line most people fill in badly.
Why your emergency contact needs to be someone who can decide
The common mistake is a relative who lives far away and has never met the dog. The useful contact is someone who can answer on your behalf without needing to reach you first.
A contact who works
- Close enough to actually drive to Ronkonkoma if it came to it
- Knows your dog's name, food and medication routine
- Has your authority to approve an extra night, extra food, or a vet visit
- Will answer an unknown number during the workday
A contact that stalls
- A relative in another state who has never met the dog
- Someone who has to call you before agreeing to anything
- A number you last confirmed three years ago
- The person sitting on the delayed flight next to you
That last one sounds obvious and is the most common version of the problem. Couples travel together and list each other. If both phones are on the same dead flight, there is nobody left to call.
Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a current veterinary health certificate for any dog at a boarding kennel: rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year unless an approved three-year vaccine is certified by your vet, and bordetella within the previous six months. Bordetella is the one that quietly lapses. If yours is near the edge, sort it before you fly, and confirm current requirements with your vet and with us when you book.
Getting home a day late: Sunday pickup is fine
A late return often lands on the day people assume everything is shut. In Ronkonkoma it is not. Daycare runs seven days a week, 7am to 7pm, and boarding check-out runs 7 to 11am every day, Sunday included. A Sunday arrival back on Long Island is an ordinary pickup, not a special favor.
Worth knowing if East Northport is your usual salon: boarding and daycare run out of Ronkonkoma only, and 16 Laurel Rd is a grooming salon closed Sunday and Monday. A weekend delay still does not strand you, because the location your dog is actually staying at is open every day.
Long Island MacArthur Airport sits in Ronkonkoma, in the Town of Islip, and the Ronkonkoma LIRR station is a major Main Line commuter and park-and-ride hub. If you fly out of ISP or leave the car at the station, your dog's stay is in the same hamlet you are departing from and coming back to — which is why so many stays here begin and end around a flight or a train.
One thing we will not pretend about: there is no after-hours collection and no emergency pickup window. If you land at 11pm, your dog sleeps here and you collect between 7 and 11 in the morning. Told in advance that is a non-event. Discovered at the door at midnight, it is a bad night for everyone.
Questions people actually ask
Do I have to pay for the extra night up front?
No. The stay is settled at check-out, so an added night is another line on the same bill at the same rate, plus food if we provided it and 8.75% sales tax.
What if my dog is booked for a bath on pickup morning?
Mention it when you call about the delay. Grooming in Ronkonkoma runs 9 to 5 seven days a week, and we will tell you whether the appointment can move to your new pickup morning or is better rebooked.
Can my neighbor collect my dog instead?
Yes, if you have told us. Name them on the boarding form at drop-off, or send it in writing when the delay happens. We will not release a dog to someone on their say-so alone.
My dog is on medication and I only packed enough for the planned days.
Say so in the same message as the delay. We can hold and give what you supply, but we cannot prescribe or substitute, and medication needing timing outside 7am to 10pm is a limitation we flag up front. Running short is a call to your vet.
Will an extra night unsettle a dog who had settled in?
Usually far less than owners expect. The routine does not change: same kennel, same 8am, 1pm and 6pm meals, same full day of daycare. What unsettles dogs is a change of place and people, not a change of date.
Plenty of people never book boarding at all because of this exact scenario. It is a fair worry and a solved one: a message, an extra night at the ordinary rate, a contact who can decide something, and a building that opens every day. The boarding page has the rates and windows.
Book the stay, not the worry.
Reserve online, then give us your dates and a real emergency contact at drop-off. If the trip runs long, one message is all it takes.
