Early Flight? Start the Boarding Stay the Night Before

People ask us some version of this every week: "My flight is early. Can I drop him at five in the morning?" The honest answer is no — and the useful answer is that you almost never need to. Book one more night on the front of the stay and the problem disappears.
Boarding check-in runs 2:00pm to 7:00pm. If you are leaving before that window opens on your travel day, add the night before to your reservation. It is a normal extra night at the normal rate, not a special arrangement.
The earliest you can hand the dog over
Our hours are published and we stick to them. There is no pre-dawn handover, no after-hours key drop and no emergency window. That is not us being difficult — it is that a boarding dog arriving in a dark, empty building with no staff already settled is a bad first hour for the dog.
Here is what actually runs at 835 Portion Rd, by service. They are different, so it is worth reading them as separate things rather than one set of "opening hours."

So the earliest a person is at the desk on any given day is 7:00am, and the boarding check-in window itself opens at 2:00pm. If your flight boards at 6:00am, there is no version of the morning where a same-day drop-off works. The extra night is not a workaround. It is the answer.
Why one extra night solves the early-departure problem
Boarding is $60 a night for a regular 4x4 private kennel and $75 a night for a premium 4x6. Every stay includes a full day of daycare at no extra charge, which matters more than it sounds like it does for this particular problem.
Think about how the two versions of the morning actually go.
Drop off the evening before
- You arrive in the check-in window, unhurried, with the bags already packed
- The dog gets dinner on the house schedule and sleeps a full night here
- Travel morning: you leave the house with one job, not three
- Your dog wakes into a normal included daycare day, not a car
Try to do it on the day
- Nobody is here before 7:00am, and check-in does not open until 2:00pm
- You are handing over a dog while watching the clock
- Any traffic problem becomes a flight problem
- The dog's last memory of you is a rushed one
An evening to settle in beats a 4am car ride
Dogs read the house. The suitcase comes out, the routine goes sideways, the humans get short with each other, and the dog has been quietly bracing for two days before anyone says a word to him. Then he gets loaded into a car in the dark.
A dog who arrives at five in the evening has time to do the boring, necessary things: sniff the space, meet the people, eat a meal at 6:00pm with the rest of the house, and sleep. By the time you are at the gate, he has already had breakfast at 8:00am and is into an ordinary day. The transition happened while you were still home, which is when you had the patience for it.
The extra night is not really for the flight. It is so the goodbye happens on an evening instead of on a deadline.
Meals run at 8:00am, 1:00pm and 6:00pm, and custom schedules are available for puppies, seniors or medical diets. One limitation worth flagging early rather than at the desk: medications that have to be given outside 7:00am to 10:00pm are a constraint on what we can take on. If your dog is on a timed dose, raise it when you book, not when you arrive.
Building the extra night into your dates when you book
Count nights, not days
Boarding is priced per night. A Friday evening drop-off for a Saturday flight adds one night — $60 regular, $75 premium — to whatever you were already booking.
Set the start date to the day before you fly
Then pick an arrival time inside the 2:00pm–7:00pm check-in window. Earlier in that window is calmer than the last twenty minutes of it.
Sort the paperwork before travel week
Vaccination records are a Suffolk County requirement, not a house rule, and they are the single most common reason a stay falls apart at the last minute. See the note below.
If it is a first stay, book the Meet & Greet separately
The first-visit evaluation runs about 30 minutes. Do it on an ordinary week, not the evening before a flight, so nobody is making decisions under pressure.
Decide on food
Bring your own, or we can provide it at $5 per day per dog. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, bring your own — a trip is the wrong week to change the diet.
Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian before a dog can be accepted at a boarding kennel: rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year (unless it is an approved three-year vaccine certified by the vet), and bordetella within the previous six months. That six-month clock is the one people lapse on without noticing, because everything else on the list renews annually. Confirm current requirements with your vet and with us before you travel.
One more eligibility point, quoted from our own boarding page so there is no ambiguity: "Pet must be non-aggressive, comfortable in a kennel, able to socialize, and free from bite history." If you are not sure your dog clears that bar, the Meet & Greet is exactly the conversation to have, and it is better had in advance.
Coming home: pickup on the day you land, or the day after
The return leg has the mirror-image version of the same problem. Check-out runs 7:00am to 11:00am. If you land at ten at night, you are not collecting your dog that night — book through to the following morning and go home and sleep.
If you land mid-afternoon, you are still outside the check-out window, so that is another night on the reservation. We would rather tell you that when you book than have you discover it in baggage claim. And if you land early enough to make an 11:00am pickup, take it — most dogs are pleased to be collected before lunch.
Boarding and daycare are at the Ronkonkoma salon, 835 Portion Rd, which is open seven days. Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) is also in Ronkonkoma, in the Town of Islip — the same hamlet, which is convenient if that is where you are flying from. Our East Northport salon at 16 Laurel Rd is grooming only, Tuesday through Saturday, so a Huntington-area boarding stay means coming out to Portion Rd. That is another good reason to do the drop-off on a calm evening rather than on a travel morning.
Questions people actually ask
Can I drop off before 7am if I call ahead?
No. Nobody is on site to receive a boarding dog before hours, and boarding check-in itself runs 2:00pm to 7:00pm. Adding the previous night is the intended solution, not a fallback.
Does the extra night cost the same as the other nights?
Yes — $60 a night for a regular 4x4 private kennel, $75 for a premium 4x6, plus 8.75% sales tax. There is no surcharge for a pre-travel night.
My flight is at 2pm. Do I still need the extra night?
Probably not, but check the arithmetic. Check-in opens at 2:00pm, so a same-day drop-off only works if your flight is late enough that you can be here after 2:00pm and still make it comfortably. If it is at all tight, book the night before.
Will my dog just sit in a kennel all day while I'm gone?
Every boarding stay includes a full day of daycare at no extra charge, and daycare runs 7:00am to 7:00pm seven days a week. Meals are at 8:00am, 1:00pm and 6:00pm.
What if my dog takes medication at 11pm?
Tell us before you book. Medications that need to be given outside 7:00am to 10:00pm are a stated limitation on what we can manage, and it is much better to find that out weeks ahead than on check-in day.
My dog has never boarded anywhere. Where do I start?
With the Meet & Greet — a 30-minute first-visit evaluation, booked on an ordinary week. Get the vaccination records sorted at the same time, particularly bordetella, which runs on a six-month clock under Suffolk County rules.
Book the night before you fly.
