Doodle Coat Change: Why the Mats Arrive All at Once

Somewhere in the second half of the first year, a doodle that has been easy to brush stops being easy. Nothing about your routine changed. The coat did. It is one of the few grooming problems that is genuinely predictable — which means you can get ahead of it, if you know what you are looking for.
The adult coat grows in underneath the puppy coat and traps it. Mats form at friction points first — behind the ears, under the collar and harness, in the armpits. Comb your dog to the skin twice a week once the coat starts changing, and keep a standing appointment roughly every six weeks. Do that and you keep every haircut length on the table.
Puppy coat to adult coat, and why it mats overnight
A puppy doodle coat is soft, fine and fairly uniform. A slicker brush skims over the top of it and everything looks fine, because there is not much underneath yet.
The adult coat is a different animal. It comes in denser, coarser, and usually with more curl. It pushes up from the skin while the puppy hair is being shed — but a curly or wavy coat does not drop shed hair on your floor the way a Labrador does. It holds onto it. So you get old, loose hair woven into new, tight-growing hair, right down at skin level, exactly where a slicker brush never reaches.
That is why it feels like it happened overnight. It did not. It was building for a couple of weeks under a surface that still looked and brushed beautifully.
Timing varies more than the internet suggests. We see it anywhere from around eight months to well past a year, and some dogs go through it gradually while others change in a matter of weeks. There is no single milestone date to mark on a calendar, whatever a breed chart tells you. Coat type matters more than age — the tighter the curl, the faster it packs.
The six-week window that decides your haircut options
Here is the part that actually matters to you, because it is the part that decides what your dog looks like when they come home.
A coat we can get a metal comb through, cleanly, from skin to tip, can be cut to any length you want. Scissored, hand-finished, left fluffy — your choice. A coat that has packed down close to the skin can only be cut shorter than the mat. That is not a preference. There is no way to cut above a mat that is sitting against the skin; the blade has to go underneath it.
Roughly six weeks is what we suggest during coat change, and it is not an arbitrary number — it is about how far a growing adult coat gets before the density outpaces most owners' brushing. Some dogs comfortably go eight. Some, mid-change, need four. We will tell you which one yours is, honestly, after we have had our hands on the coat.

Shorter now, longer later: an honest conversation
If your dog has pelted — the coat moving as one sheet rather than in strands — we will tell you before we start, and we will recommend taking it short. That conversation is not us giving up. Brushing a pelted coat out is hours of pulling on skin that is already sore underneath, and the dog is the one paying for it. Taking it off is faster, kinder, and gives you a clean starting line.
Skin that has been sealed under packed hair is often red, damp or irritated, and you will not see it until the coat comes off. We will point out anything that looks wrong, but we are groomers, not vets — anything sore, weepy, or that does not settle in a day or two needs your veterinarian, not us.
What we will not do is promise you an outcome we cannot control. We cannot guarantee a coat grows back with exactly the texture it had, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. What we can tell you is that a short cut partway through the change, brushed properly through the regrowth, generally puts you in a much better place a few months later than a year of near-misses does.
The comb decides what is possible. The brush only decides how it looks on top.
Line brushing at home in five minutes a day
You do not need to brush the whole dog every day. You need to reach the skin somewhere, every day, and rotate.
Get two tools
A slicker brush and a metal greyhound-style comb. The comb is the important one. The brush fluffs; the comb tells the truth.
Part the coat
Lay the dog on their side or lift a leg. Push the hair up with one hand so you can see a line of skin.
Brush the line, not the surface
Brush the exposed inch downward, then drop the parted hair down a little and do the next line. You are working from the skin outward, in stripes.
Test with the comb
Run the comb through what you just did. If it snags, that section is not done. If it glides, move on.
Rotate zones
Monday ears and neck, Tuesday front legs and chest, Wednesday back legs and tail, Thursday body, Friday the collar and harness lines again. Five minutes each.
Two practical notes. Brush before the bath, never after — water tightens a mat like a knot. And take the harness off at home; a harness worn all day through coat change will build a mat under the straps no matter how good your brushing is elsewhere.
Booking ahead so you don't get caught out
The simplest thing you can do is leave with the next appointment already made. Six weeks out, in the calendar, done. If your dog's comb test is clean when the date comes around, tell us and we will do a bath and brush instead of a full haircut — that is a perfectly good use of the slot, and it costs less. Grooming is priced by weight: bath and brush runs $35 to $120, a full groom with a haircut $70 to $155.

Questions people actually ask
My dog looked fine last week. How is he matted now?
Because the mats form at skin level and grow outward. The top coat looks and brushes normally the entire time. This is exactly why the comb matters more than the brush — the comb is the only thing that reports on the layer that counts.
At what age does the coat change happen?
There is no fixed date, and we would be making it up if we gave you one. Anywhere from around eight months to well past a year is normal, and the curlier the coat, the sooner it tends to start. Let the comb tell you rather than the calendar: the week it starts snagging near the skin is the week your routine needs to change.
Can you just brush the mats out instead of cutting short?
Sometimes, and we will if it is reasonable. The line we draw is the dog's comfort. A few tight spots, yes. A coat that has felted across the body, no — that is a long, painful process on skin that is usually already irritated.
Will the coat grow back different after a short cut?
We will not promise you either way, because coat texture through the adult change is doing its own thing regardless of what we cut. What is reliable is the regrowth stage: brushed properly, it comes back manageable rather than repeating the same problem.
How short is "short"?
We will show you the guard length on the dog before we start, and we will always take the least we can get away with. If we have to go shorter than we discussed once we are into the coat, we stop and call you.
Do I need to come every six weeks forever?
No. Coat change is the intense stretch. Once the adult coat has fully come in and your brushing routine is established, plenty of doodles settle comfortably into eight weeks. We will tell you when you have got there.
What if I only want the mats out and no haircut?
That is a reasonable ask and we do it. Just know that the areas we clear will sit differently against the rest of the coat until it evens up.
