Dog Grooming for St James, NY: Prices, Hours and Booking

If you live in St James and you have typed your own town name into Google three different ways, you are not imagining things. Saint James, St. James and St James are three different strings in a search box, and each one can hand you a slightly different list of groomers. So here is the plain version from our side: what we charge, when we are open, and how to book without picking up the phone.
Bath & Brush is $35 to $120 and a full groom with haircut is $70 to $155, both set by your dog's weight. We are at 16 Laurel Rd in East Northport, Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and the booking happens online.
Where we are, and why the town line matters less than it looks
Our salon is at 16 Laurel Rd, East Northport, NY 11731. East Northport is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, bordered by Northport to the north, Commack to the south, Greenlawn to the west and Fort Salonga to the east. We are grooming only at this address, and that is the whole of it.
Town lines out here are administrative, not practical. Commack, just south of us, is split between the Town of Huntington and the Town of Smithtown, divided by Townline Road, and families live on one side of that road and shop on the other without giving it a thought. The reason it is worth mentioning at all is dull but real: a lot of directories and map results sort businesses by town and ZIP, so a salon that is a short drive from you can be effectively invisible in a list that thinks in boundaries.
Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown does not allow pets at all — it is a passive preserve, and bikes and picnics are banned along with dogs. Sunken Meadow State Park allows leashed dogs only in the undeveloped eastern portion; dogs are barred from the beaches, boardwalks, playgrounds, golf course, pools and buildings. Worth checking before you build a day around it.
Saint James, St. James, St James: one place, three strings
You will see all three spellings in the wild — on mail, on listings, on signage, on the side of a van. None of them is wrong. But a search engine treats them as three separate strings, which is why "dog groomer Saint James NY" and "dog groomer St James NY" can return two partly different sets of results.
If you are shopping around, the practical move is to search it more than once, and to search the towns next to you as well. The list you see first is rarely the whole market. It is worth knowing that the organic results for grooming searches around here are mostly directories — Yelp, Care.com, Nextdoor — rather than salons themselves, so the ranking order tells you more about who bought or built a listing than about who suits your dog.
Nobody should have to guess the spelling of their own town to find a groomer.
Bath & Brush or full groom: how to decide before you book
Almost all of the guesswork at booking comes down to one question. Does your dog need a haircut, or does your dog need to be clean and combed out? Those are two different appointments and two different prices, and picking the right one is mostly about coat type.
Bath & Brush is usually right when
- The coat does not grow long — labs, beagles, pit mixes, shepherds, most short and smooth coats
- Your dog is a heavy shedder and the problem is hair on the couch, not length
- The coat is in good shape and you just want it reset
- You are between haircuts and want to stretch the gap
A full groom with haircut is right when
- The coat keeps growing — poodles, doodles, shih tzus, maltese, bichons, cockers, terriers kept in a pet trim
- Hair is getting into the eyes, or paw pads and sanitary areas need tidying
- The coat is starting to tangle behind the ears, in the armpits or on the collar line
- It has been long enough that you cannot remember the last one
If you are genuinely unsure, book the full groom. It is easier for a groomer to do less than to do more, and a dog booked for a bath who turns out to need a full clip is a dog who gets rushed or rescheduled.
Tight matting cannot be brushed out without hurting the dog, and dematting a badly packed coat is worse for them than a short clip. If that is where you are, expect the honest answer to be a shorter haircut than you pictured, and expect it to look better in six weeks. If we find skin that looks irritated, infected or otherwise wrong underneath, we will tell you what we saw and point you to your vet. We do not diagnose anything.

The reason we make a point of it: published pricing is rare in this market. Of 18 Long Island salons audited from their own websites, only 7 offered online booking and only 3 published any pricing at all. Among fixed salons in the Huntington, East Northport and Commack area specifically, we could not find one publishing rates — the price ranges you can find online mostly belong to mobile groomers, who are a different service at a different cost.

East Northport is open five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm. We are closed Sunday and Monday. That is the whole schedule, and it is worth checking against your own week before you settle on a salon. Hours are one of the biggest clusters in Google's own autocomplete — type "groomer open" and it finishes with open today, open now, open on Sunday, open late. We are not the Sunday answer.
If Sunday or Monday is the only day that works for you, book Ronkonkoma instead. Same company, same standards, open every day. And if you want daycare, overnight boarding or shampoo off a shelf, that is Ronkonkoma too — East Northport is a grooming salon and nothing else.
Questions people actually ask
Is it worth the trip from St James when there are groomers closer?
Only you can answer that, and we would rather be straight about it. If you already have a groomer your dog is comfortable with, stay put. What we offer is a published price range before you book, real online booking rather than a request form, and a salon that does one thing. If those are the parts you have been missing, it is a short drive.
Do you groom cats?
No. Dogs only.
Are you open on Sunday?
Not in East Northport. Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Our Ronkonkoma salon is open seven days, 9am to 5pm.

Can you do color, patterns or a show trim?
No. We do not do creative coloring or show grooming. Everyday pet trims done properly is the job here.
Can you tell me what that lump or rash is?
No, and you should be wary of any groomer who tries. Grooming is hands-on work, so we do notice things — a hot spot, a lump, an ear that smells wrong — and we will describe exactly what we saw and where on the body. Then it is a conversation for your vet, not for us.
