Why it is a range and not one flat price
Grooming time is mostly water and coat. A twelve-pound dog holds a fraction of the water a seventy-pound dog holds, dries in a fraction of the time, and takes a fraction of the brushing to get through. The same service on a small dog and a large dog is simply not the same amount of work, and everyone who has ever towelled off a wet retriever already knows it. What is unusual around here is publishing the numbers at all. Of eighteen Long Island salons audited from their own websites, only seven offer online booking and only three publish any pricing. In the immediate area — Laurel Road, Larkfield Road, Jericho Turnpike, and over into Commack — the salon-based groomers generally do not put prices on their sites. The Long Island mobile services mostly do. So if you have been calling around for a number, that is why it felt like work.
The range is not vagueness. It is the whole price list, compressed into its only real variable.
Bath and brush: what the $35 to $120 covers
A bath and brush is what the name says. Wash, dry, and a genuine brush-out. No clippers, no scissors, no change in length. Your dog leaves looking like the same dog, clean.
This is the right booking more often than people expect. It suits smooth and short-coated dogs almost always — beagles, labs, pit mixes, boxers — because there is nothing to cut. It suits double-coated dogs like huskies, shepherds and goldens, where the answer to a heavy coat is de-shedding and a thorough dry, not a shave. And it suits a well-maintained long coat between haircuts, if you are brushing at home and the length is still where you want it.
Where it does not work: a coat that has already matted, and a dog whose length you actively want changed. Both of those are haircut territory.
Full groom with haircut: what the $70 to $155 covers
The full groom is the bath and brush plus the clipper and scissor work — the part that changes how your dog looks. Doodles, shih tzus, maltipoos, poodles, westies, cockers, anything with hair that keeps growing rather than coat that sheds out.
Two things worth noticing in those published numbers. First, the haircut adds a comparable amount at both ends — the gap between the two ranges is $35 at the bottom and $35 at the top. The haircut is not what scales. The dog is. Second, a large dog booked in for only a bath can land above a small dog's full haircut. That is drying and brushing time, not the clippers, and it is the single most common reason a quote surprises someone.

What to mention at booking — and what it does not change
Weight places you in the published range, and that is the whole of it. The details below do not move you up or down inside a band; the range is the range. What they do is tell a groomer what the appointment is actually going to look like, which is worth a lot on a morning when your dog is standing on the table and nobody has said anything useful yet.
If a coat is matted down to the skin, the safe outcome is usually shorter than what you had in mind. Mats cannot be brushed out of a packed coat without hurting the dog, and cutting around them leaves a worse result than starting fresh. Say at booking that the coat is matted so the length conversation happens before the clippers do, not after.
If you are guessing the weight, or your dog is between two bands
Most owners are within a few pounds and do not know it. Your vet's most recent record is the most reliable number you have — puppies and seniors both drift, and a dog you remember as forty-five pounds may be fifty-two now.

The East Northport salon runs five days, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 to 5. Sunday and Monday it is closed.
Anything the groomer should know
If the form gives you a notes box, use it. Matting, a sore spot, a dog that dislikes the dryer, a length you want kept — all of it is more useful before the appointment than during it.

What if I do not know my dog's exact weight?
Use the weight from your dog's last vet visit — it is the most accurate number most owners have access to. If you are genuinely between two bands, book the heavier one and mention the uncertainty. Under-booking does not make the groom cheaper; it just moves the conversation to the morning of the appointment.
Why not one flat price per breed?
Because breed is a poor predictor. Two goldendoodles can differ by forty pounds and by an entire coat type. Weight bands are blunt, but they are honest and you can check yourself against them at home, which a per-breed price list would not let you do.
Does a matted or difficult coat cost more?
The published price is set by weight and by which of the two services you book. What matting changes is the plan — usually a shorter cut than you were picturing — which is exactly why it is worth flagging when you book rather than at drop-off.
Is a bath and brush enough for a doodle?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. If you are brushing right down to the skin at home a few times a week and the length is still where you want it, a bath and brush between haircuts is a real option and costs less. Once the coat has packed down, though, brushing alone is not the answer and you want the full groom.
Are you open Sunday?
Not in East Northport. Tuesday through Saturday, 9 to 5, closed Sunday and Monday. The Ronkonkoma salon is open seven days if the weekend is the only thing that works for you.
Do you groom cats?
No. Dogs only, and no creative coloring or show grooming either. If your dog has a skin, ear or lump issue, a groomer can point it out but cannot diagnose it — that is a conversation for your vet.
