Almost everything written about dog daycare assumes you leave at eight and get home at six. If you work nights, rotate, or pick up doubles, none of it lands. The real question isn't whether your dog needs daycare — it's what you do on the weeks your schedule makes no sense to anyone but you.
Our daycare and boarding run out of one building: 835 Portion Road in Ronkonkoma. The East Northport salon does grooming only, so anything overnight or all-day happens here.
What follows is the honest version of how our hours, prices and rules fit an irregular week — including the places where they plainly don't, so you can plan around them instead of finding out at the door.
Daycare is open seven days, 7am to 7pm. Boarding check-in is 2pm to 7pm, check-out is 7am to 11am. Late daycare pickup is $5 per 15 minutes, so a short overrun is still the cheaper choice — but past about an hour and a quarter late, a $60 boarding night costs less than the day plus the fees, and it already includes a full day of daycare.
When your workday doesn't start at nine
The first thing worth saying is that a lot of night-shift owners are solving the wrong problem. They come in worried about the dog being alone from 7pm to 7am. But most adult dogs sleep through that stretch the same way they'd sleep through it if you were home. The part that actually breaks is the other end: you get in at seven thirty in the morning, you need six or seven hours of sleep, and there is a dog who has just watched you walk through the door and has decided the day has started.
That's what a daycare day is really buying a night worker. Not company for the dog overnight — sleep for you during the day.
The second thing worth saying is that you may not need us every week. If your dog is an adult, settles well, and your longest stretch away is eight or nine hours, home is often fine and cheaper. Daycare earns its keep when the shifts stack: two 12s back to back, a double, a swing week where you're leaving before the dog has properly woken up and getting back after dark. Buy it for the weeks that are hard, not for the whole year.
Long Island MacArthur Airport is in Ronkonkoma, in the Town of Islip, and the Ronkonkoma station is one of the Main Line's big commuter and park-and-ride hubs. Neither of those runs on a nine-to-five clock, so shift schedules are not unusual around here. Daycare and boarding are both at 835 Portion Road, and daycare is open seven days a week.
Half days versus full days on a rotating schedule
Published daycare pricing is simple, and the gap between a half day and a full day is small on purpose.

Sales tax of 8.75% applies. The detail that matters most for shift work is this one: the packages have no expiration date. That's the whole reason they suit a rotating schedule. A pass that expires in 90 days punishes you for the month you got moved to nights and didn't need daycare at all. Ours doesn't run out, so a quiet stretch costs you nothing.
Two honest cautions. Packages are non-refundable, so don't buy twenty days before your dog has ever spent a day with us — start with single days or the five-day and see how they settle. And if you genuinely only ever do short drop-offs, do the arithmetic before you buy: a half day at $30 is less than a five-day pass works out to per day. Ask us how a pass day gets applied to a half day and buy afterwards, not before.
The other thing not worth doing is clock-watching. If your shift plus the drive puts you over four hours, take the full day. Saving five dollars by racing the clock is not a good trade against arriving stressed on three hours of sleep.
The 7pm question, done with actual numbers
This is the decision most shift workers get wrong in both directions, so here is the arithmetic instead of a rule of thumb. Daycare closes at 7pm. Late pickup after that is $5 per fifteen minutes on top of the $35 day. A regular boarding night is $60, a premium 4x6 kennel is $75, and every boarding stay already includes a full day of daycare at no extra charge.

Figures are before sales tax, and the point isn't the pennies. It's that the crossover sits at roughly an hour and a quarter, not at 7pm. A shift that ends at 7:15 is a late pickup. A shift that ends at 8:30 or later is a boarding night. Anyone telling you to book a $60 night because you finish at quarter past seven is costing you money.
The line isn't 7pm. It's about an hour and a quarter past it.
One thing the table can't price: if you're coming off a twelve-hour shift, the drive matters more than the twenty dollars. Booking the night so you're not racing a clock at the end of a long day is a defensible choice even when the math says otherwise. Just make it knowingly.
Overnight boarding for back-to-back shifts
Boarding is $60 a night in a regular 4x4 private kennel and $75 a night in a premium 4x6. The included daycare day is the part people miss — a boarded dog is not sitting in a kennel for twenty-four hours. They get the day out of it too.
Fits the hours cleanly
- Nights, roughly 7pm to 7am: check in by 7pm, collect any time from 7am
- Two 12s back to back: one boarding night covers the gap between them
- A shift that ends at 9 or 10pm: board rather than pay by the quarter hour
- Coming off nights and going straight to bed: 7am check-out means you're home early
Needs a workaround
- A shift starting before 7am — we can't take a drop-off earlier, so board the night before
- Finishing at noon and wanting the dog immediately: boarding check-out closes at 11am
- Arriving after 7pm with no booking — check-in has to happen inside the window
- Medication that has to be given between 10pm and 7am: tell us before you book, that timing sits outside what we can commit to
Feeding runs at 8am, 1pm and 6pm, and we can build a custom schedule for puppies, seniors or medical diets. If packing a bag at five in the morning is one thing too many, we can provide food at $5 a day per dog.
Standing weekly bookings and how they work
People ask whether they can just lock in the same days every week. The honest answer is that a rotating schedule and a fixed weekly slot are working against each other, and the thing that actually solves it isn't a standing booking — it's a pass that never expires. Book the days you know about, as far ahead as your schedule is published, and let the unused days sit. They keep.
Book the meet and greet
A 30-minute first-visit evaluation before any daycare or boarding stay. It's how we see how your dog handles the room, and it's also when you should ask your awkward questions.
Bring your actual schedule
Come with the real thing, including the weeks you already know are ugly. It's far easier to plan around a double you can see coming than one you mention the day before.
Book as far out as your schedule allows
We won't pretend space is guaranteed — no honest kennel can. But days you've asked for early are days we can plan around.
Buy the pass second, not first
Run a few single days. Once you know the routine works for your dog, step up to the pass size that matches how often you actually use it.
What we need on file before the first stay
Boarding paperwork in Suffolk County is set by the county, not by us. Suffolk County Code § 302-13 requires a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian showing vaccination against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless it's an approved three-year vaccine certified by your vet — plus bordetella within the previous six months. Boarding facilities also have to keep records for each dog for twelve months from the last day of use.
Bordetella runs on a six-month clock while the rest run on a year, which makes it the requirement owners most often let lapse without realizing. That's harder again on shift work, because getting to a vet inside their opening hours is its own scheduling problem. Put a reminder in your phone at five months. Confirm current requirements with your own vet and with us before your first stay.
Separately, New York requires a dog to be licensed and rabies-vaccinated from four months of age under Agriculture and Markets Law § 109. And it's worth knowing what bordetella does and doesn't do: kennel cough is properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, with something like eleven contributing pathogens according to the AVMA. The vaccine reduces risk. It does not make a dog immune, and any groomer or kennel telling you otherwise is overselling.
There's also a temperament requirement for boarding, in the wording on our own site: "Pet must be non-aggressive, comfortable in a kennel, able to socialize, and free from bite history." The meet and greet is where that gets decided, and it is genuinely better for everyone to find out at a 30-minute evaluation than on night one of a five-night stay.
Questions people actually ask
Can I drop off before 7am if my shift starts at six?
No. Daycare opens at 7am and that's the earliest we can take a dog. If your shift starts before then, the fix is a boarding night: check in the previous afternoon between 2pm and 7pm, and collect after your shift.
My shift runs past 7pm. Late pickup or boarding?
Depends how far past. Late pickup is $5 per fifteen minutes on top of the $35 day, so 7:15pm is $40 and 8pm is $55 — both cheaper than a $60 boarding night. Around 8:15pm the two are level, and after that the night wins, since it also includes the full daycare day. If you finish at nine, board.
Do the daycare packages expire if I go a month without using them?
No expiration date, which is exactly why they suit an irregular schedule. They are non-refundable, though, so buy the size that matches your real usage rather than your optimistic usage. Sales tax of 8.75% applies.
Can you give medication overnight?
Tell us the schedule before you book. Medication that has to be given outside 7am to 10pm is a known limitation for us, and it's better to hear that now than to discover it mid-stay. Anything medical is a conversation for your vet first — we can follow a plan, we can't write one.
Is my senior dog too old for boarding?
Age on its own isn't the deciding factor. Comfort in a kennel, ability to settle, and any medical needs are. That's what the 30-minute evaluation is for, and we'd rather tell you honestly that boarding isn't right for your dog than take the booking.
I only need a groom, not a whole day. Where do I go?
Grooming runs 9am to 5pm at Ronkonkoma, seven days a week. Our East Northport salon at 16 Laurel Road is grooming only, Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm — if that's closer to you and a groom is all you need, use it. Bath and brush runs $35 to $120 by weight, and a full groom with haircut $70 to $155.
If your week is genuinely unpredictable, the two things to take away are these. The daycare-versus-boarding line sits about an hour and a quarter past 7pm, not at 7pm itself — so don't buy a night for a fifteen-minute overrun, and don't rack up fees on a shift that ends at nine. And a pass that never expires means the weeks you don't need us don't cost you anything. Everything else is just booking the days you can see coming.
