Daycare for Small Dogs: What to Ask Before You Book

If your dog weighs ten pounds, the question you actually want answered is not what the daycare rate is. It is whether your dog will spend the whole day getting flattened by a Labrador. Ask it first, ask it plainly, and expect a specific answer rather than a brochure line.
Daycare runs out of Ronkonkoma only, seven days a week, 7am to 7pm. Every new dog starts with a 30-minute meet and greet. That half hour is where you ask how your dog would be grouped, what happens when play gets rough, and whether daycare suits your dog at all — before you pay for a full day.

Size and play style matter more than breed
Owners tend to ask about breed. "Is there a Shepherd in the group?" It is the wrong question.
Two things decide whether a pair of dogs has a good time together, and neither is on the pedigree. The first is size, because a weight gap is a physics problem, not a temperament problem. A friendly seventy-pound dog who body-slams as a greeting is not being aggressive. He is being a seventy-pound dog. The eight-pound dog underneath him still gets hurt.
The second is play style, which varies enormously inside a breed. Some dogs wrestle, some chase, some bark at the wrestling from a safe distance and are happy doing that all day. Put a chaser with a wrestler and neither gets what they came for.
A well-matched pair of dogs looks boring from the doorway. That is exactly the point.
There is also a risk most amenity lists never mention: chase can tip over. Larger dogs pursuing a small dog who is genuinely running away can shift out of play into something with a different flavor, fast, and the dogs involved are not being vicious when it happens. Avoiding it is mostly a matter of not building that pairing in the first place.
What a good match looks like, and what does not
Weight alone does not sort dogs correctly. A stocky, confident twenty-pound terrier and a delicate twenty-pound Italian Greyhound are the same number on a scale and nothing alike on the floor. What follows is general dog sense, not a printed rule — use it to know what you are looking at, and to know what to ask about your own dog.
Usually a good match
- Similar weight, similar build
- Matched intensity — two wrestlers, or two chasers
- Dogs who take breaks on their own
- Dogs who read a "no thanks" and back off
Usually needs separating
- Big weight gap, even with a gentle big dog
- One dog running away while others pursue
- A dog who never disengages
- Guarding toys, water or a person
- A dog hiding rather than joining
Rest matters as much as play. A tired dog plays worse than a fresh one, and small dogs are often the ones who run out of road first. Ask how breaks work on a normal day — at our Ronkonkoma desk or at any daycare you are considering. It is a fair question and you should get a concrete answer. And if your small dog comes home and sleeps through dinner, that is a normal daycare day, not a warning sign.
Toy breeds: what to flag before the first day
Small dogs are not fragile as a rule, but the margin for error is smaller. A misjudged landing a Golden shakes off can be a real problem for a six-pound dog. Groomers and daycare staff notice things; we do not diagnose them. Everything on this list is something to tell us about at the meet and greet, and something to raise with your veterinarian.
If your small dog pulls, bring a harness for drop-off — easier on the neck, easier on the handler. And skip dangling tags or a bulky charm on daycare days. Anything that can catch on another dog's tooth or jaw during play is worth leaving in the car.
Making the 30 minutes count
Daycare and boarding both start with a 30-minute meet and greet, a first-visit evaluation. For a confident dog it is close to a formality. For a nervous small dog it is the whole point, and it is your chance to interview us as much as the other way round.
Tell us the unflattering things
He snaps when startled. She hates men in hats. He was chased at a dog park last year and has not been the same since. None of it automatically disqualifies a dog. All of it changes what a sensible first day looks like.
Ask how your dog would spend the day
Who would your dog be around, how is that decided, and who makes the call if it is not working. Ask it about your specific dog on a specific day rather than in general.
Ask what happens when something goes wrong
How you get told, when you get told, and what the threshold is for calling you rather than mentioning it at pickup. Agree that in advance and nobody is guessing later.
Ask what would make them say no
For boarding, our published eligibility is plain: "Pet must be non-aggressive, comfortable in a kennel, able to socialize, and free from bite history." Ask the equivalent question for daycare and listen for a real answer. A place that has never turned a dog away has not been paying attention.
And take the answer seriously if it is no. Daycare is genuinely good for a dog who likes company. It is not a moral requirement. If your dog is happiest with you and one familiar friend, you do not need us for that. The Town of Huntington runs a small off-leash dog run at the animal shelter on Deposit Road in East Northport — free with a town permit for Huntington residents with a licensed, spayed or neutered, rabies-current dog. West Hills County Park has a dog park with separate large and small sections, though a county green-key permit and fee are reported as required.

Passes have no expiration date and are non-refundable. Sales tax of 8.75% applies. Pickup after 7pm is $5 per 15 minutes. If you would rather not pack food, we can provide it at $5 a day per dog. Honest advice for a first-timer: buy a single day, not a pass, and buy the pass after you have seen how your dog comes home.
Adding a bath to a daycare day
Grooming, daycare, boarding and the shop are all at the same Ronkonkoma address, so a bath on a daycare day is a scheduling question rather than a second trip across Suffolk. Small dogs tend to come out of a play day smelling like other dogs.
It is priced separately — bath and brush runs $35 to $120 by weight, a full groom with a haircut $70 to $155. Ask when you arrange the daycare day whether a grooming appointment can be lined up alongside it.
Paperwork, before you turn up
Bring your dog's vaccination records to the meet and greet. If anything has lapsed, sort it with your vet first. New York requires a dog to be licensed and rabies-vaccinated from four months of age under Agriculture and Markets Law § 109, and overnight boarding in Suffolk County adds a longer list on top of that.
Questions people actually ask
Will my small dog be around a big dog?
This is the right question and it deserves a specific answer rather than a general reassurance, so ask us directly at the meet and greet and again at drop-off on the day. A large weight gap is the clearest reason to keep dogs apart, and anyone looking after your dog should be able to tell you plainly how they are handling it for your dog.
My dog is nine and does not really play. Is daycare pointless?
Sometimes, yes, and that is a fine answer. Bring the question to the 30-minute evaluation and be honest about what your dog's ideal day looks like. If it is a sunny spot and no strangers, daycare is not doing much for either of you, and a half day is a cheaper way to test the theory than a ten-pack.
What vaccinations are required?
For overnight boarding, Suffolk County Code § 302-13 governs it: no boarding kennel may accept a dog without a current health certificate from a licensed veterinarian showing rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus and coronavirus within the previous year — unless it is an approved three-year vaccine certified by the vet — plus bordetella within the previous six months. The bordetella clock is the one people miss, because it runs at half the length of the rest. Confirm what is current, and what applies to a daycare day, with your vet and with us.
Does bordetella mean my dog cannot catch kennel cough?
No, and anyone telling you otherwise is overselling it. What people call kennel cough is properly canine infectious respiratory disease complex, and the AVMA identifies roughly eleven contributing pathogens. The vaccine is worth having. It is not a force field. A cough afterwards is a call to your vet.
Can I just turn up with my dog?
Plan on the 30-minute meet and greet first — that is how a new dog starts with us, and for a small or nervous dog it is the part that does the work. Contact the Ronkonkoma salon to arrange it rather than assuming a slot is open on the day.
