September in Northport: Book the Groom Before Cow Harbor Day

Great Cow Harbor Day falls on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from noon to 5pm, with the parade running down Main Street in Northport Village. Our East Northport salon is closed Sundays and Mondays. So if you want the dog freshly bathed for it, Saturday the 19th is the last appointment before the event — not because anything is filling up, but because there is simply no Sunday to book.

What is actually on

Great Cow Harbor Day is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2026, noon to 5pm. The parade comes down Main Street in Northport Village, forming up at the Brosnan Administration Building on Laurel Avenue.

Worth flagging the name overlap for anyone typing an address into their phone: we are on Laurel Road in East Northport. The parade forms on Laurel Avenue in Northport Village. Similar names, different places. Ours is the grooming salon at 16 Laurel Rd, East Northport, NY 11731.

If you are new to the area, the geography is simple enough. East Northport is a hamlet in the Town of Huntington, unincorporated, ZIP 11731. Northport is the incorporated village just to the north, with the harbor at the bottom of Main Street. Cow Harbor Day is a Northport Village event rather than an East Northport one, though the two sit right next to each other and plenty of people from this side of the line go.

Why Saturday the 19th is the deadline

Nothing dramatic here. The East Northport salon runs five days: Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm. We are closed Sunday and Monday. That means the calendar around the event looks like this:

A Friday groom holds perfectly well for a Sunday, incidentally. A clean, dry, brushed-out coat does not go stale in 48 hours unless the dog finds mud. So if Saturday is awkward for you, Friday the 18th does the same job, and the week before that does most of it.

Bringing the dog to the event? Ask the organizers

This is the part where we are going to be unhelpful on purpose. We cannot tell you whether dogs are permitted at Cow Harbor Day. It is a village-wide event with a parade and crowds, and the rules are set by the event's organizers, not by us. Look at their own announcements before you plan around it, and take their word over anyone else's, including ours.

What we can say, because these are ordinary published facts about the village: Northport Village Park — the roughly nine-acre waterfront park at the foot of Main Street, also called Cow Harbor Park — permits dogs on leash, and has paved paths, benches, parking and restrooms. Main Street's sidewalks are dog-friendly and a number of shops and restaurants put water bowls out. Sand City Brewing in Northport welcomes leashed dogs. On a normal weekend, that makes Northport an easy dog outing. Event day is not a normal weekend, which is exactly why you check with the organizers rather than assuming.

While you are out: late September is still tick season

If your dog is walking the village, the harbor path, or anywhere with grass and leaf litter that weekend, do a tick check when you get home. New York State's health department splits its deer-tick surveillance into two fixed windows — nymphs from May to September, adults from October to December — so the third weekend in September sits right at the handover between them.

For context rather than alarm: Suffolk County recorded a 2025 nymph density of about 61 ticks per 1,000 square meters, which ranked eighth in the state — well behind Orange, Oneida and Dutchess counties. Long Island is not the worst place in New York for tick density. It is simply a place where checking the dog is a sensible habit rather than an overreaction.

Grooming is not tick prevention, and we are not a substitute for one. What a groom does give you is a set of hands and a comb going over every inch of the dog under good light, which is how we sometimes find a tick, a hot spot, a lump or a patch of irritated skin that nobody had noticed. We will tell you exactly what we found and where. Anything that needs diagnosing or treating is a conversation with your vet, not with us.

What a bath and brush actually does the day before

If the dog is coming out in public, or if you just want the house livable before guests arrive, a bath and brush is usually the right service — not a full haircut.

The brush-out is the part that matters most and the part people skip at home. Bathing a shedding dog without drying and brushing it out properly just redistributes the loose undercoat; done properly at the salon, most of that coat leaves with us instead of with your car seats. It is also the difference between a dog that looks clean on Friday and one that still looks clean on Sunday.

What it costs

We publish our prices, which around here is not a given. Of eighteen Long Island salons audited from their own websites, only three published any pricing at all and only seven offered online booking. Ours is by weight: smallest dogs at the bottom of each range, largest at the top.

The honest answer is that most dogs do not need a groom for an event. They need one when the coat needs one.

When you should not bother booking

If the dog was groomed in the last three or four weeks and the coat is still open and clean, an event is not a reason to book again. Bathing a dog you do not need to bathe is not cost-free for the dog's skin and coat. Save the appointment for when the coat has actually earned it.

Same goes if the plan is to leave the dog home on Sunday anyway. Book on your own schedule, not the parade's. Tuesday through Thursday is a quieter, calmer experience for a dog than the end of the week, and for a nervous dog that is worth more than the timing.

One thing that is worth acting on regardless of what is happening in the village: if brushing has become a struggle and the comb is catching close to the skin, that is a matting problem, and matting only gets worse with time. Left long enough it stops being a styling decision and starts being a comfort one. That is a reason to come in this month.
